Chapter 9 - The Debt Paid in Full

Emma gasped, taking a step forward. "Gabriel... get up."
"No," Gabriel whispered.
He lifted his face to hers. Tears were streaming freely down his dark, scarred cheeks—unashamed, raw, and desperate tears. He reached out with hands that had broken syndicates and executed men, and gently took her soft, flour-dusted hands in his, pressing his forehead against her knuckles.
"I hurt you," Gabriel wept, his voice breaking completely. "I looked at you... the woman who saved my daughter, the woman who gave me back my life... and I let my dark, poison world make me doubt you. I drove you away into the cold."
Emma looked down at the powerful man kneeling at her feet.
She saw the agonizing guilt tearing his soul apart, saw the years of buried grief and paranoia finally washing away in a flood of pure, unvarnished truth.
She didn't pull her hands away.
Slowly, tenderly, Emma knelt down on the rug before him, bringing her face level with his. She reached up with both hands, cradling his broad, tear-stained cheeks, her thumbs wiping away the dampness on his skin.
"Look at me, Gabriel," Emma whispered softly.
Gabriel opened his eyes, searching her face with a desperate, terrified hope.
"I didn't come back here because I was angry," Emma said, her voice filled with a deep, unwavering warmth that filled the cold room like summer sunshine. "I came back because I knew you were hurting. I came back because a man who buys twenty pounds of apples just to see a child smile isn't a bad man. He's just a man who forgot that he deserves to be loved too."
Gabriel let out a ragged, sob-choked gasp, pulling her into his arms with a fierce, desperate strength. He buried his face in her neck, breathing in her scent of cinnamon, yeast, and fresh rain, holding her so tightly it felt as if he would never let her go again.
"I love you, Emma," Gabriel whispered into her hair, his whole body shaking against hers. "God help me, I love you so much."
"I know," Emma smiled through her own tears, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders and kissing his cheek. "I love you too, Don Gabriel."
The library door clicked open softly.
A tiny figure stood in the doorway, wearing pink pajamas, clutching a stuffed rabbit under one arm.
Sophie blinked her big brown eyes, looking at her father kneeling on the floor, holding Emma close.
"Emma?" Sophie whispered, her voice filled with cautious, disbelieving wonder.
Emma turned her head, her face lighting up with a radiant smile. "Hey, sunshine drop."
Sophie dropped her rabbit and ran across the room, throwing her small body straight into the space between them. Gabriel caught her with one arm, wrapping his other arm around Emma, pulling both of his treasures against his beating heart.
Sophie buried her face in Emma’s green coat, letting out a long, happy sigh. "I told Daddy you'd come back. Stars always show you how to find your way home."

Gabriel looked over his daughter’s head at Emma, his dark eyes shining with a quiet, eternal peace that no money, no empire, and no fortress could ever have purchased.
"Yes, they do, sweet girl," Gabriel murmured, kissing Emma’s lips softly. "Yes, they do."
