Chapter 5 - The Glass Fortress

At seven o'clock precisely, the heavy iron gates of the Moretti estate swung open to admit a single, sleek black sedan.

There were no flashing lights, no twenty armed men standing in tactical formation, and no floodlights blinding the windshield. Gabriel had personally ordered the security team to maintain a low profile, sweeping the perimeter from the shadows while he waited on the front marble steps alone.

When the sedan stopped, Gabriel opened the door himself.

Emma stepped out, wearing a deep forest-green dress that hugged her soft curves with breathtaking elegance. Her dark hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, and around her wrist sparkled the silver charm bracelet he had sent her.

Gabriel stood still for a second, his dark eyes taking her in from head to toe. "You look... magnificent, Emma."

"Thank you," Emma smiled, feeling a flush of warmth rise up her neck. "You don't look so bad yourself, Don Gabriel."

He offered her his arm, and she slipped her hand through the crook of his elbow.

The estate felt completely different tonight. The oppressive, cold atmosphere that had filled the halls three weeks ago had been transformed. Soft piano music played through the hidden speakers, warm candlelight flickered along the marble corridors, and the scent of roasted garlic, rosemary, and sweet peaches filled the air.

In the grand dining room, a long oak table had been stripped of its formal silver settings. Instead, three placemats were set close together at one end near the massive bay window looking out over the moonlit gardens.

"Emma!" Sophie screamed, coming flying out of the kitchen wearing a yellow dress and matching ribbon in her hair.

She threw herself into Emma’s arms, almost knocking them both off balance. Emma caught her easily, laughing as she swung the little girl around before setting her down on her feet.

"Look at you!" Emma said. "You look like a sunshine drop!"

"Rosa made peach tart!" Sophie babbled excitedly, grabbing Emma’s hand and pulling her toward the table. "And Daddy helped set the plates! He dropped a spoon and it made a loud noise!"

Gabriel chuckled softly, walking over to pull out Emma’s chair. "The spoon was defective," he said smoothly.

For the next two hours, Emma experienced a side of Gabriel Moretti that no businessman, criminal rival, or news reporter had ever seen.

He laughed. Truly laughed.

When Sophie spilled peach juice on his napkin, he didn't call a servant; he wiped it up himself with a grin. When Emma told a story about how her grandfather had once dropped an eighty-pound sack of flour onto the neighborhood priest, Gabriel leaned back in his chair and laughed so hard his eyes crinkled at the corners.

For the first time in three years, the house felt like a home.

After dinner, Rosa took a sleepy Sophie upstairs to read her a bedtime story.

Gabriel led Emma out through the French doors onto the stone terrace overlooking the gardens. The cool night air carried the scent of wet pine and distant rain, and above them, a blanket of silver stars burned clearly in the clear autumn sky.

Gabriel pulled his overcoat around Emma’s shoulders, stepping up close behind her as she leaned against the stone balustrade.

"Thank you," Gabriel murmured, his chin resting near her temple, his arms wrapping gently around her waist.

"For what?" Emma whispered, leaning back into his solid, warm chest.

"For bringing life back into this place," Gabriel said. "After Elena died... I thought my heart was buried with her. I thought my only purpose left in this world was to protect Sophie from the dark. But you showed me that protecting her isn't enough. I have to live for her. And... I want to live for you."

Emma turned around in his arms, looking up into his face. The cold, ruthless Don was completely gone. In his eyes was a deep, unvarnished devotion that made her heart ache with happiness.

"Gabriel," she whispered softly.

He leaned down, his dark eyes searching hers for a fraction of a second, before pressing his lips to hers.

The kiss was sweet, warm, and deeply tender. It wasn't rushed or violent; it was the slow, reverent kiss of a man who had finally found his way home after wandering through a long, freezing night. Emma wrapped her arms around his neck, standing on her tiptoes, tasting the rich dark coffee and sweet wine on his lips.

When he finally pulled back, his dark eyes were burning with an intensity that took her breath away.

"Stay with me," Gabriel whispered, his thumb caressing her jawline. "Not just tonight. Be part of our lives, Emma. I want to build a world with you."

Before Emma could answer, the glass French doors behind them burst open.

Anthony Vale stood in the doorway, clutching an iPad in his hand, his face pale, his gold-rimmed glasses slightly askew.

"Gabriel," Anthony said, his voice flat and urgent. "You need to see this. Immediately."

Gabriel’s brow furrowed, his grip on Emma tightening protectively. "Anthony, I told you I was not to be disturbed tonight."

"It's about Miss Brooks," Anthony declared, looking directly at Emma with an expression of icy, victorious malice. "Federal agents from the Financial Crimes Division just filed a fraud notification with our legal team. It involves thirty thousand dollars transferred into her business account two hours ago."

Emma froze. "What?"

Anthony walked forward, holding out the screen. "A transfer from an offshore entity registered in the Cayman Islands, Gabriel. The same entity linked to the Boston syndicate that tried to intercept Sophie three weeks ago."
