Chapter 7 - The Taste of Truth

Inside Joanne’s Table, the kitchen was a masterpiece of stainless steel, warm copper pots, and the rich, intoxicating aromas of real food.

Joanne stood at the main pass, holding a silver spoon, tasting a fresh batch of artisan ricotta cheese made from local organic milk delivered that very morning from a family farm in Fredericksburg.

She closed her eyes, savoring the rich, creamy, slightly sweet flavor.

"Well, Chef?" Mason asked, leaning against the pass, watching her with a smile.

Joanne opened her eyes and smiled. "It’s perfect. Not a grain of filler."

She plated a small portion onto a toasted piece of sourdough bread, drizzled it with wildflower honey, and handed it across the counter to Mason.

"Taste it," she commanded softly.

Mason took a bite. The combination of warm, crusty bread, smooth, rich cheese, and floral honey exploded on his palate. It was simple, unpretentious, and utterly extraordinary.

"If we served this at the Grand Crest," Mason said, chewing slowly, "we’d have a three-month waiting list for dinner reservations."

"You already have a three-month waiting list at the Grand Crest," Joanne teased gently. "I heard your new Executive Chef is doing wonderful things."

After the scandal, Mason had completely revamped the management of Vance Hospitality. He had appointed a renowned, highly ethical female chef to run the Grand Crest kitchen, instituted a transparent, blockchain-based supply chain ledger, and created an independent employee ombudsman position—named the "Joanne Parker Whistleblower Office"—to ensure no employee’s voice would ever be silenced again.

"She’s doing great," Mason admitted, taking another bite. "But her ricotta isn't as good as yours."

Joanne laughed—a warm, musical sound that made Mason’s heart beat a little faster.

Over the past few months, as they worked side-by-side to build the restaurant, Mason had found himself spending less and less time at his corporate headquarters in Chicago and more time in San Antonio.

He had convinced himself at first that he was just "monitoring his investment." But deep down, he knew the truth.

He didn't care about the corporate towers anymore. He cared about the woman who had survived the storm with her head held high, whose grace, courage, and fierce love for her daughter had captured his heart completely.

"Mr. Vance?" Lily called out, running into the kitchen holding a clipboard. "The Mayor just arrived! He wants to try the ricotta!"

Mason smiled, turning to Joanne. "Shall we feed the Mayor, Chef?"

Joanne wiped her hands on her apron, her eyes shining with joy. "Let's feed the whole city, Mason."

It was the first time she had called him by his first name without adding "Mr."

Mason felt a warm spark ignite in his chest, knowing that the wall between them had finally tumbled down forever.
