Chapter 5 - The Voice in the Dark

The news of the scandal broke the next morning, sending shockwaves through the hospitality industry.
Headlines across Texas read: MAFIA-STYLE FRAUD UNCOVERED AT GRAND CREST HOTEL: REGIONAL DIRECTOR AND EXECUTIVE CHEF ARRESTED.
Mason didn't hide behind corporate spokespeople. He held a live press conference in the main lobby of the Grand Crest Hotel. Standing before dozens of news cameras, Mason personally detailed the fraud, publicly apologized to the hotel’s guests, and announced a complete restructuring of the company’s quality control systems.
"And finally," Mason said, looking directly into the camera lenses, "I want to speak about Joanne Parker. Mrs. Parker was a senior cook at this hotel who displayed legendary courage. She tried to protect our guests when my own executives failed them. The Vance Hospitality Group is officially clearing her name of all false accusations, filing criminal charges against those who slandered her, and establishing a ten-million-dollar whistleblower protection fund in her honor."
The room erupted in applause from reporters, but Mason didn't stay to take questions.
He drove straight to San Antonio General Hospital.
When he walked into the private penthouse suite on the top floor, he found the room filled with fresh flowers, sunlight, and quiet music. Mrs. Rosa was sitting in a plush armchair, while Lily sat on the edge of the bed, holding her mother's hand.
Joanne’s eyes were open.
Mason stopped in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat.
"Mom woke up an hour ago!" Lily cried out, jumping up from the bed and throwing her arms around Mason’s waist. "Mr. Vance! She’s talking!"
Mason hugged the little girl gently, then stepped up to the side of the bed.
Joanne Parker looked up at him. She was thin, her skin still pale, but her dark eyes were clear, sharp, and filled with deep consciousness.
"Mr... Vance?" Joanne’s voice was raspy, dry, and slow, but completely coherent.
"Don't try to sit up, Mrs. Parker," Mason said softly, leaning down to take her hand gently. "You're safe now. You're in good hands."
"Lily told me..." Joanne whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "She told me what you did... the hotel... Brandon... Richard..."
"They are both in prison, Joanne," Mason promised her, his voice thick with emotion. "Their bail was denied this morning. They will never hurt you, your family, or anyone else ever again."
Joanne closed her eyes for a moment, a long, shuddering sigh escaping her lips. It was as if four years of accumulated terror, shame, and exhaustion were finally melting away from her soul.
"I wrote you a letter," Joanne murmured, opening her eyes again. "They told me... you threw it in the trash."
"I never received it," Mason said, looking into her eyes with absolute sincerity. "If I had, I would have come to San Antonio four months ago to stand beside you. I am so deeply sorry, Joanne. I failed to protect you."

Joanne reached out her frail thumb, brushing a tear from her own eye, then offered Mason a small, weak, but incredibly warm smile.
"You’re here now, Mr. Vance," she whispered. "You saved my daughter. That’s all that matters."
