Chapter 6 - THE FINAL WARNING

The rain returned to Dallas the following night, drumming heavily against the windows of a modest two-bedroom townhome in North Dallas.

Inside, Arthur Sterling sat in a small living room that felt suffocatingly cramped compared to his former twenty-thousand-square-foot estate. Empty takeaway boxes sat on the coffee table. Beatrice was in the bedroom, sobbing quietly into her pillow, unable to accept her new reality.

Arthur was staring at a paper document on his desk—a draft contract from the private security firm he had hired in secret.

"Just give us forty-eight hours, Mr. Sterling," the security director had told him over the phone earlier. "We will find something on Vance Global or Clara's past. Everyone has dark secrets. Once we have the photos, Vance will pay whatever you ask to protect his pristine corporate reputation."

Arthur reached for his pen, his hands shaking slightly. "This is my last chance," he muttered to himself, his eyes bloodshot. "I will not rot in poverty. I will get my son out of prison."

KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.

The three loud, deliberate knocks on the front door echoed through the quiet townhome like gunshot blasts.

Arthur jumped, dropping his pen. "Who is that at this hour?"

He walked nervously to the front door, looking through the peephole. Outside, standing on the small porch under a black umbrella held by a bodyguard, was Julian Vance.

Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs. He unbolted the door and opened it an inch, keeping the safety chain engaged.

"Julian?" Arthur stammered. "What... what are you doing here?"

"Open the door, Arthur," Julian said softly. His voice was calm, but it carried an authority that made resistance feel impossible.

Arthur hesitated, then unhooked the chain and opened the door wide.

Julian stepped inside, taking off his wet leather gloves, his black trench coat impeccably dry. He didn't wait for an invitation; he walked into the small living room, his sharp eyes instantly taking in the clutter, the cheap furniture, and the document sitting open on the desk.

Beatrice came out of the bedroom, wearing an old bathrobe, her hair unstyled. When she saw Julian standing in her living room, she froze in horror.

"Julian..." Beatrice whispered, her hands trembling. "Did... did Clara send you? Is she dropping the charges?"

Julian didn't answer her. He walked directly to the desk, picked up the private security contract Arthur had been about to sign, and read it in silence.

Arthur reached out frantically. "That’s private property! You have no right—"

Julian didn't even raise his head. He simply raised his left hand, and Arthur immediately went silent, terrified of what might happen next.

Julian tossed the document onto the coffee table.

"Two million dollars, Arthur," Julian said quietly, taking a seat on the leather armchair opposite Arthur. "You spent your absolute last remaining financial asset to hire bottom-feeder private investigators to stalk my wife and child."

Arthur’s face drained of all color. "How... how did you know about that?"

"I own the financial pipeline those two million dollars traveled through," Julian said, leaning back and resting his chin on his hand. "Do you really think you can play covert games in my domain, Arthur? You are an amateur trying to play chess with a grandmaster."

"I am a desperate father!" Arthur yelled, his voice cracking with emotion. "You took my company! You put my son in a jail cell! You stripped us of our home! What else do you want from us?!"

"I wanted to leave you alone," Julian said, his eyes turning cold as ice. "My wife, in her incredible mercy, ensured that you and Beatrice were given a housing trust and a monthly allowance so you wouldn't die on the streets. She gave you grace when you deserved none."

Julian leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees, his gaze locking onto Arthur’s terrified eyes.

"But instead of accepting her mercy, you decided to target my son again," Julian continued softly. "So let me make the rules of engagement absolute, Arthur. If those private investigators take one single step toward my wife or son... if you speak Clara’s name to a reporter... or if you ever make another attempt to interfere with our lives..."

Julian paused, letting the silence stretch out, heavy and suffocating.

"What?" Arthur whispered, trembling. "What will you do?"

"I will personally purchase every single debt instrument tied to this townhome," Julian said, his voice flat, devoid of anger, which made it ten times more terrifying. "I will cancel your monthly allowance trust. I will ensure that every legal defense team representing Ethan resigns by tomorrow morning. And I will make sure you spend the remainder of your natural life in a state-run facility where no one will ever hear your voice again."

Beatrice fell to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably. "Please... Julian, please! We won't do anything! We promise! Just don't destroy us any more than this!"

Arthur sank into his chair, completely broken. The last spark of defiance in his eyes died out, replaced by total, absolute defeat. He realized then that he was not dealing with a business rival he could manipulate; he was dealing with a protector who would eradicate anything that threatened his family.

"The two million dollars you sent to Houston has been frozen and returned to the Sterling employee pension fund," Julian said, standing up and putting his leather gloves back on. "Consider that your final donation to the people you robbed."

Julian walked toward the front door. He paused at the threshold, turning back to look at Arthur and Beatrice one last time.

"Live your quiet life in this home," Julian said softly. "Forget you ever had a daughter. Because as far as Clara and Lucas are concerned... you no longer exist."

Julian opened the door, stepped out into the rainy night, and closed it behind him, leaving Arthur and Beatrice alone in the cold, silent room.
