Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

The fallout from the clinic confrontation was immediate and chaotic. Armed with the digital evidence Killian’s team had uncovered, Dileia filed a formal appeal with the state medical board. The story leaked to the Hadley Chronicle—not as a simple malpractice case, but as a massive corporate cover-up by Mercy Hospital’s elite board to protect their most profitable surgeon.

Pike went into hiding, his reputation in tatters as the board suspended his license pending a full criminal investigation. But men like Pike do not fall quietly.

Dileia sat in the library of Killian’s estate, watching the rain beat against the glass. It reminded her of the night she had found him in the alley. So much had changed in a month. She was no longer the desperate woman dragging a suitcase through the gutter. She was secure, her niece was thriving, and she found herself falling deeply, dangerously in love with the man who had given her everything.

The door opened, and Killian walked in, carrying a glass of scotch. He looked tired, the shadows under his eyes showing the strain of the ongoing war with Pike's political backers.

"You're thinking too loud," he said, walking over and sitting on the arm of her chair. He placed a warm hand on her shoulder, his fingers gently massaging the tension there.

"I'm worried about Pike," Dileia admitted, leaning into his touch. "He's desperate, Killian. Men like him, when they lose their status, they lose their minds. He knows you're the one behind the leaks."

"Let him try," Killian said, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "My men have his house watched. His bank accounts are frozen. He has nowhere to go."

Suddenly, the house’s alarm system shrieked—a high-pitched, deafening wail that shattered the quiet evening. The red emergency lights along the baseboards began to flash.

Marcus burst into the room, his weapon drawn. "Sir! We have a breach at the perimeter! A delivery van rammed the main gates. They’re inside the courtyard!"

Killian was on his feet instantly, pulling Dileia behind him. "Where is Maya?"

"She's with the nanny in the panic room, Sir," Marcus said. "But they brought heavy ordnance. This isn't a street gang. These are professional mercenaries."

Killian turned to Dileia, his face pale but his eyes filled with an absolute, unyielding determination. He reached into his coat and pulled out a small, silver handgun, pressing it into her hands. "Go to the panic room, Dileia. Lock the door from the inside. Don't open it for anyone but me or Marcus."

"Killian, no! You're still recovering!" she cried, gripping his jacket.

He leaned down, catching her lips in a sudden, fierce kiss that tasted of scotch and desperation. "You saved my heart, Dileia. Now let me protect it."

He pushed her toward Marcus, turned, and disappeared into the darkened hallway as the sound of gunfire began to echo from the front foyer.
