Chapter 8 - The Heart of Mateo

Six months later.

The pediatric wing of the Ospedale Bambino Gesù in Rome was one of the quietest, most advanced medical facilities in Southern Europe.

Outside the glass doors of Operating Room 4, Rocco paced the corridor floor like a caged lion.

For seven hours, a team of world-renowned pediatric cardiologists had been performing a delicate, complex open-heart repair on six-month-old infant Mateo Jr.—the baby Sophia had pulled from the rubbish area six months earlier.

Mateo sat on a wooden bench near the window, holding a miniature wooden clock mechanism he was trying to assemble, while Sophia sat beside him, handing him tiny brass gears with small tweezers.

"Not that gear, Mateo," Sophia instructed softly, pointing her tweezers at a circular wheel with twenty-four teeth. "That’s the hour gear. You need the escape wheel first, or the spring will unwind too fast."

Mateo grinned, taking the tiny wheel. "You're smart, Sophia. How do you remember where every gear goes?"

"I don't remember," Sophia smiled, tapping her nose with her pencil. "I just pay attention."

The heavy double doors of the operating room swung open.

Dr. Alessandro Conti, the chief surgeon, stepped out into the hallway, pulling off his surgical mask and cap, wiping sweat from his forehead.

Rocco stopped pacing instantly. His face was tense, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.

"Doctor..." Rocco breathed, his voice barely audible.

Dr. Conti looked at Rocco, then at the two children sitting on the bench, and allowed a broad, weary smile to illuminate his face.

"He’s a fighter, Mr. Moretti," Dr. Conti announced warmly. "The arterial repair was a complete success. His heart rhythm is perfectly stable. In three weeks, he will be going home with you."

Rocco let out a long, ragged breath, his massive shoulders slumping as five pounds of suffocating worry vanished from his chest.

He stepped over to the glass wall of the neonatal recovery room.

Inside a clear incubator lay the newborn baby—now healthy, pink-cheeked, his small chest rising and falling in a steady, peaceful rhythm.

Mateo walked up beside his father, pressing his small forehead against the glass wall, watching his baby brother sleep.

"He looks small, Dad," Mateo said softly.

"He is small, Mateo," Rocco smiled, placing his hand gently on his son's head. "But he has the heart of a Moretti. He survived the dark, just like you did."

"Are we going back to Naples now?" Mateo asked, looking up.

"No," Rocco said, turning his head to look at Elena and Sophia, who were walking up behind them. "We are going to Palermo. To the villa on the hill. Where there are no dark hallways, no secret cameras, and no lies."

Elena stepped up beside Rocco, holding a tray of hot espresso cups she had brought from the cafeteria.

"Mr. Moretti," Elena said softly. "The papers arrived from the court this morning. The adoption and legal guardianship decrees for Sophia's schooling are finalized."

Rocco looked down at Sophia, who was holding her leather notebook against her chest.

"Sophia," Rocco said, kneeling down on one knee before her. "Five months ago, I promised you that I would send you to the finest school in Europe. But last night, I talked with Mateo and your mother."

Sophia tilted her head. "Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"I don't want to send you away to a school," Rocco said, his voice filled with a warm, fatherly affection that he had thought dead inside him forever. "I want you to stay with us. I want to build a private academy right on the estate in Palermo. So you, Mateo, and your little brother can learn together."

Sophia looked at her mother, who was crying soft, happy tears, then looked at Mateo, who was grinning wildly and nodding his head.

"Will the academy have a watchmaker’s workshop?" Sophia asked, her eyes sparkling with innocent curiosity.

Rocco laughed out loud—a real, booming, joyful laugh that echoed down the hospital corridor, startling three nurses near the desk.

"It will have the biggest watchmaker’s workshop in Italy, Sophia," Rocco promised, holding out his hand. "Built by hand, gear by gear."

Sophia placed her small hand into his massive palm, sealing the contract that would heal a broken empire.
