Chapter 6 - The Rose Garden Trap

The south vineyard exit was a narrow stone archway hidden beneath thick tangles of dead ivy and wild blackberry bushes.

Valentina Moretti stepped out into the muddy alleyway, breathing heavily, her expensive mink coat soaked in rain and ruined by wet earth. Behind her, Dr. Harrison Vance—a tall, aristocratic man in his sixties with slicked-back gray hair—stumbled over the stones, carrying a heavy silver aluminum briefcase.

"Hurry up, Harrison!" Valentina hissed, looking frantically down the fog-shrouded road where a black escape sedan was supposed to be waiting. "Marcus hasn't answered his phone in four hours! Something went wrong in Milan!"

"The driver should be here!" Dr. Vance panted, setting the silver briefcase down on a wet wooden crate. "Valentina... if Rocco knows about the St. Helena records, we are dead! You know what he did to the syndicate in Naples!"

"Rocco knows nothing!" Valentina spat, pulling a small silver pistol from her purse. "Marcus was supposed to drop the baby in the river and return to the house. Rocco thinks I am at my father's house in Geneva!"

"Are you sure about that, Valentina?"

A deep, quiet voice emerged from the thick wall of sea fog ten feet away.

Valentina froze. Dr. Vance let out a high-pitched gasp, staggering backward against the stone wall.

Rocco stepped out of the fog. He wore no tactical vest, no helmet—just his black suit, soaked in rain, his eyes cold and hollow like twin obsidian stones.

Behind him, emerging from the tree line, were six heavily armed operators, their weapon lights piercing through the gray mist, pinning Valentina and her uncle in brilliant white circles of light.

Valentina’s breath caught in her throat. Her hand trembled as she held her small silver pistol, pointing it at Rocco’s chest.

"Rocco..." she gasped, trying to summon that polished, elegant charm she had used for six years to manipulate him. "Rocco, darling... what is this? What are you doing here?"

"I just came from the north tower, Valentina," Rocco said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "My son has your eyes’ coldness written all over his memories. He told me you visited him once a year... to tell him his mother died giving birth to him because he was an unwanted curse."

Valentina’s face drained of all color. "Rocco... listen to me! It wasn't my idea! It was my uncle! It was the family!"

"Shut up, you fool!" Dr. Vance screamed, backing away into the ivy.

"Eight years," Rocco said, his voice dropping so low it seemed to vibrate the ground beneath their boots. "Eight years I grieved Isabella. Eight years I thought my blood was buried in a silver box in Palermo. And all the while, you were feeding off my grief like a maggot in an open wound."

"I gave you everything!" Valentina shrieked, her composure completely shattering into pathetic, desperate panic. "I gave you social standing! I gave you political access! You were nothing but a blood-soaked mobster from Naples until my family made you respectable!"

"My respectability was born in my honor, Valentina," Rocco said calmly, stepping within three feet of her gun barrel. "Not in your blood-stained rose oil."

Valentina’s finger tightened on the trigger. "Don't come any closer! I’ll kill you, Rocco! I swear to God I’ll kill you!"

Before she could pull the trigger, a small figure stepped out from behind Rocco’s long coat.

Sophia held her spiral notebook in one hand, pointing her little pencil directly at the silver briefcase sitting on the wooden crate.

"The metal box has the blue sticker from St. Helena," Sophia said clearly, her voice cutting through the rain. "The same sticker that was on the blanket in your kitchen."

Dr. Vance looked at the eight-year-old girl, his eyes wide with wild, frantic terror. "Who is this child?!"

"She is the watchmaker’s daughter," Rocco said. "The girl who found the gear you dropped."

Rocco didn't even draw his weapon. He simply reached out with lightning speed, grabbing Valentina’s wrist and snapping it back with a sharp, sickening CRACK.

Valentina screamed in agony, dropping the silver pistol into the mud as she collapsed to her knees, clutching her broken wrist to her chest.

Mario stepped forward, grabbing Dr. Vance by the neck and slamming him face-first against the stone wall, snapping plastic flex-cuffs around his wrists.

Rocco picked up the silver briefcase from the crate. He used his heavy boot to kick open the lock.

Inside the briefcase lay hundreds of pages of original hospital documents: Isabella’s real medical charts, the forged death certificates, the international trust transfer files, and the secret DNA registries connecting Mateo and the newborn infant directly to the Moretti estate.

Rocco looked down at Valentina, who lay sobbing in the red mud at his feet.

"You wanted my fortune, Valentina," Rocco said, staring down at her with pure disgust. "You wanted my land, my docks, my name. But you forgot one thing about the Moretti family."

He leaned down, his face inches from her tear-streaked, mud-covered cheek.

"We never leave our blood in the trash."

Rocco looked up at Mario. "Take them to the estate in Palermo. Put them in the subterranean vaults beneath the chapel where they told me my son was buried. Let them spend the rest of their natural lives looking at the empty grave they built for my child."

"Understood, Boss," Mario said, dragging Dr. Vance toward the waiting security vehicles.

Rocco turned away, reaching down to take Sophia’s small, cold hand into his massive palm.

"Let's go home, Sophia," Rocco said softly, looking up toward the château where Mateo was waiting at the window. "We have a family to rebuild."
