Chapter 5 - The Fragile Miracle

Back at Thorne Medical Center, the intensive care unit was silent save for the rhythmic, metallic ticking of life-support machinery.

Marcus sat by Khloe’s bedside, his large hand completely enveloping hers. Khloe was pale, her skin almost blending in with the sterile white sheets of the hospital bed. A thick band of medical tape secured an IV line to her wrist, pumping antibiotics and blood thinners into her weak system.

Through the glass partition behind them, in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), their son lay inside a plastic incubator. Born at just seven months, weighing barely three and a half pounds, his tiny chest heaved under the assistance of a mechanical ventilator. He was covered in wires and sensors, a fragile miracle fighting for every breath.

Khloe’s eyelids fluttered open, the heavy fog of the anesthesia finally lifting. She didn't look at the luxury room or at the flowers that filled the corners. Her eyes immediately darted to her stomach, which was now flat and tightly bandaged.

"Marcus..." she whispered, her voice cracking with a terrifying panic. "Where is he? Is he... did he survive?"

"He’s alive, Khloe," Marcus said quickly, leaning over her, his voice thick with a raw emotion he hadn't allowed himself to show in front of his mother. He brought her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles. "He’s in the NICU. He’s a fighter, just like his mother. Dr. West says his vitals are stabilizing."

A single, heavy tear rolled down Khloe’s cheek. She turned her head to look through the glass partition, her eyes locking onto the tiny incubator. "Can I see him?"

"Not yet, sweetheart. You had severe internal bleeding. They had to repair your uterine wall," Marcus explained gently, his thumb smoothing the hair away from her forehead. "But I promise you, the moment Dr. West gives the clearance, I will carry you over there myself."

Khloe looked at Marcus, her expression a mix of relief and deep, unresolved pain. For months, they had been living like strangers in the same house, torn apart by the manipulation of his family. "Why are you here, Marcus? Isabella said... she said you wanted this. She said you were just waiting for an excuse to get rid of me so you could sign the Rossi merger."

Marcus felt a sharp, physical pain in his chest, worse than any wound he had ever received. He dropped his forehead against the edge of her mattress, his shoulders shaking.

"I was a fool, Khloe," he choked out, his voice breaking completely. "I let my father's debts and my mother's poison blind me. I thought I was protecting the family by focusing on the business. I never thought... I never realized they were capable of such monstrous cruelty. I am so sorry. I didn't protect you. I didn't protect our son."

Khloe was silent for a long moment. She reached out her other hand, her fingers gently resting on the back of his dark hair. She could feel the genuine, agonizing remorse radiating from him. "The truth is out now, Marcus. But Isabella’s family... they won't let this go. Her father, Vittorio Rossi, is an extremely dangerous man. He won't let his daughter stay in prison."

Marcus raised his head, his eyes turning back into the cold, calculating flint that had made him the most feared CEO in the state. "Let him try. I’ve already contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We aren't playing by Texas rules anymore, Khloe. I’m going to dismantle the Rossi family piece by piece."
