Chapter 2 - The Evidence in Black and White

The absolute silence inside the VIP hospital suite was more suffocating than the humid night air pressing against the reinforced glass windows. Marcus Thorne stood like a statue carved from obsidian, his hand gripping the titanium frame of his phone so tightly that his knuckles turned a ghostly white. The screen glowed against his palm, a tiny rectangle of light casting a harsh glare over his sharp, aristocratic features.

On that screen, the truth played out in a high-definition, unedited loop.

The security footage, pulled directly from the encrypted cloud servers of the Thorne Medical Center, left no room for interpretation. Marcus watched as Isabella Rossi, the woman his family had pushed him toward for years, slammed his seven-months-pregnant wife into the mahogany side table. He watched the champagne glass shatter. And then, with a sickening clarity that made the blood in his veins turn to liquid nitrogen, he saw Isabella draw back her leg and deliberately drive the razor-sharp heel of her stiletto into Khloe’s side.

"Marcus, please, you have to listen to me," Isabella stammered, her voice dropping its frantic, theatrical pitch as she noticed the absolute lack of warmth in his eyes. She took a step toward him, her crimson dress rustling like dry autumn leaves. "The camera angle... it doesn't show everything. She provoked me. She told me she was going to ruin the Thorne legacy, that she only married you for the trust fund. I was protecting you!"

Marcus didn't look up from the screen. He watched the video finish. He watched his wife collapse onto the floor, her hands desperately cradling the child they had spent two agonizing years trying to conceive.

"Isabella," Marcus said. His voice wasn't a roar. It wasn't the furious thunder he usually leveled at incompetent board members. It was a flat, dead whisper—the sound of a man who had just looked into the abyss and realized he had built his own hell. "If you take one more step toward my wife, I will ensure the police don't bother with a squad car. They'll bring a cage."

Isabella froze, her perfect, manicured hands hovering in the air. The gala coordinator behind Marcus let out a small, terrified squeak and slowly backed out into the hallway, pulling the double doors shut to give the billionaire his privacy.

Marcus dropped his phone onto the uncarpeted portion of the floor with a dull thud. He didn't care about the device. He fell to his knees beside Khloe, his heavy tuxedo jacket brushing against the jagged shards of the broken champagne glass.

"Khloe," he breathed, his large hands trembling violently as he reached out to her. For months, he had been cold, distant, wrapped up in the multi-billion-dollar merger his father had demanded—a merger that Isabella’s family controlled. He had allowed himself to be blinded by duty, believing the whispers his mother and Isabella had fed him about Khloe being an opportunist. But looking at the pale, translucent skin of his wife’s face and the deep crimson stain beginning to bloom across the side of her white satin maternity gown, the illusion shattered into dust. "Khloe, look at me. Don't close your eyes."

"The... the baby, Marcus," Khloe gasped, her lips blue, her fingernails digging into the fabric of his sleeve. "I can't feel him moving. He was kicking twenty minutes ago... and now there's nothing. Please, don't let her touch him."

"No one is touching you," Marcus vowed, his chest heaving. He lifted his head toward the ceiling-mounted intercom. "Code Blue, Suite 402! Get Dr. West and the surgical team up here now! If anyone hesitates, I'll tear this hospital down brick by brick!"

Isabella backed toward the balcony doors, her face twisting from panic into a calculating, venomous sneer. "You're making a mistake, Marcus. My father controls forty percent of the Thorne Enterprise shares. If you file charges against me, the merger dies tonight. Your father's legacy goes bankrupt before the sun comes up."

May you like

Marcus slowly turned his head to look at her. The man who had entered the room was a businessman bound by contracts. The man looking at her now was a father whose child had just been kicked in the womb.

"Let it burn," Marcus said softly. "Watch how fast I light the match."
