Chapter 9 - Shadows in the Rearview

By winter, the snow had begun to blanket the manicured lawns of the estate, turning the neighborhood into a picturesque winter wonderland. Inside, the crackling fireplace cast a golden, dancing glow across the living room walls where family portraits hung proudly—unbroken, unmarred, and eternal.

My mother was sitting by the bay window, knitting a warm woolen scarf while listening to classical music playing softly on the stereo. I walked in from the kitchen carrying two mugs of hot cocoa topped with marshmallows, setting one gently down on the wooden side table beside her chair.

“Thank you, sweetheart,” she smiled, looking up from her needles. “You know, you spoil me too much.”

“You spent sixty-six years taking care of everyone else, Mom,” I replied, sitting down on the sofa opposite her. “It’s your turn to be spoiled.”

My phone buzzed on the coffee table. I glanced down at the screen. It was a brief email notification from Arthur Vance regarding the final liquidation of Derek and Melissa’s remaining forfeited assets. The auction of their seized personal items had cleared, and the residual restitution funds had been deposited directly into a newly established charitable foundation we had created in my father’s name—a fund dedicated to providing emergency legal and housing assistance to elderly victims of financial abuse and domestic neglect.

We had taken our trauma, our pain, and our anger, and we had forged it into a shield for others who couldn't fight for themselves.

I closed the email, locked my phone, and tossed it back onto the table.

I didn't need to look at legal briefs anymore. I didn't need to monitor bank statements or check security camera feeds. The war was over, the battle was won, and the castle was secure.
