Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Home

The evening snow fell in soft, silent flakes against the large glass panes of the living room window, blurring the lights of the streetlamps outside into warm, hazy halos of gold.
I sat beside my mother on the plush sofa, our shoulders touching, wrapped in the comforting silence of a home that had finally reclaimed its soul.
Melissa and Derek were locked away in their respective cells, living out the consequences of their own boundless greed and cruelty—a stark reminder that while bullies and abusers may think they hold all the power, their reign is always built on sand, destined to collapse the moment truth walks through the front door.
My mother looked over at me, her eyes shining with a deep, profound peace that time and trauma could never erode.
“Elena,” she whispered softly, her hand reaching out to squeeze mine. “Are you happy?”
I looked around the warm, beautifully lit room—at the family photos on the wall, at the crackling fire in the hearth, at the woman who had endured unimaginable cruelty and emerged from the fire with her dignity entirely intact.

I smiled, my heart swelling with a deep, unshakeable sense of completion.
“I’ve never been happier, Mom,” I said, leaning my head against her shoulder as the snow fell outside. “We’re home.”
