Chapter 9 - THE RIVER’S EDGE

That evening, after Sadie was tucked safely into bed and my son was sleeping soundly in his crib, I walked out onto the wooden dock behind our riverfront property.
The water moved slowly beneath the pale moonlight, dark and deep, carrying the reflections of the city skyline downstream toward the ocean.
I pulled a small, heavy envelope from my coat pocket—the final legal document from the federal prosecutor’s office officially severing all parental and custodial rights of the Whitmore family, and granting me absolute, undisputed guardianship of both my children under my maiden name, Claire Carter.
I held the paper for a long moment, watching the autumn breeze tug at the edges.
Then I let go.
The envelope drifted down, touching the dark surface of the river before being swept away into the current, vanishing into the deep water without a trace.
I turned around, walked back toward the warm, glowing lights of the house, and locked the back door behind me.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't waiting for the other shoe to drop. I wasn't looking over my shoulder, and I wasn't living inside someone else’s master plan.
The house was mine. The children were mine. The future was mine.
