Chapter 7 - THE FINAL VERDICT

Judge Sterling didn't hesitate when rendering the verdict.
“Grant Whitmore, for your role in conspiracy, medical tampering, and attempted child abduction, this court sentences you to twenty-two years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for the first twelve years.”
He turned his gaze toward the defense table.
“Eleanor Whitmore, for orchestrating institutional racketeering, systemic human trafficking, and corporate fraud across four decades, you are sentenced to thirty years in federal prison. May whatever legacy you thought you were building rot away behind those gray walls.”
The gavel came down with a final, definitive crash.
Bang. Bang.
It was over.
As the federal marshals stepped forward to lead them away in heavy steel chains, Grant turned around once, his eyes locking onto mine across the courtroom.
There was no arrogance left in his expression. No corporate bluster, no condescension, no threats.
Just a hollow, defeated whisper that carried across the quiet room before the heavy doors closed behind him.
“I’m sorry, Claire.”

I turned away, grabbed my leather portfolio, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright, unyielding afternoon sunlight.
