Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in the Dark

The interior of the warehouse was vast, echoing, and smelling faintly of rusted iron and old sea salt.

In the center of the open floor, beneath a single swinging industrial work light that cast harsh, erratic shadows, sat a wooden chair. Bound tightly to the chair with heavy industrial zip-ties was an elderly woman. She wore a worn brown wool coat, her head slumped forward, a plaid scarf wrapped twice around her neck.

"Eileen!" Meredith gasped, taking an involuntary step forward before Psyian’s arm shot out to bar her way.

At the sound of footsteps, a man stepped out from behind a towering stack of wooden crates near the back wall.

Arthur Vance looked older than his years, his face lined with bitter hatred, a scar running down his cheek from an old dockyard brawl. In his right hand, he held a heavy nickel-plated revolver, the barrel pointed lazily toward the floor—though it could snap up and fire in a fraction of a second.

"Psyian," Arthur sneered, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "You actually came. Alone... well, almost alone. Brought your little waitress girlfriend to watch the execution, did you?"

Psyian walked forward into the light, his hands loose at his sides, his face an impenetrable wall of ice.

"Let her go, Arthur," Psyian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "This was between our families twenty years ago. My mother was never involved in your father's schemes. She was just an innocent bystander you tried to bury."

"Innocent?!" Arthur barked a harsh, ugly laugh. "Your family stole everything from mine! My father died in a cold prison cell while yours sat in a penthouse suite drinking champagne! And for twenty years, I watched you build an empire while I rotted in the shadows. I wanted you to feel what it's like to lose the only thing that anchors your soul to this miserable earth."

Arthur raised the revolver, bringing the barrel right to the side of Eileen’s head. The old woman stirred faintly, letting out a soft, confused whimper beneath her scarf.

Meredith’s heart stopped. "Don't! Please don't hurt her!"

"Shut up, girl!" Arthur snarled, his eyes wild with adrenaline and madness. "Psyian, drop your weapon! Drop it right now, or I splatter her brains across this concrete floor before your very eyes!"

May you like

Psyian didn't blink. He slowly reached inside his coat, his fingers closing around his firearm. But as he began to draw it, his eyes flicked sideways—calculating the distance, the angle, the trajectory of Arthur’s finger on the trigger.

It was a fraction of a second too slow. Arthur’s finger began to tighten.
