Chapter 6 - The Battle of Cook County

The Cook County Courthouse was an imposing marble structure built in the early twentieth century, its towering pillars and wide granite steps slick with melting snow as Andrew’s convoy pulled up to the curb at three-forty-five.
Four black SUVs formed a protective barrier around the main Maybach. Marcus stepped out first, flanked by eight heavily armed private security officers in discrete suits, scanning the crowded plaza.
Andrew stepped out of the vehicle, holding Ethan tightly in his left arm, while Sarah Jenkins walked on his right carrying three thick leather briefing cases. Ethan wore a tailored charcoal wool coat that matched Andrew’s, his tiny hand holding Andrew’s thumb with absolute trust.
Reporters and photographers were lined up along the police barricades, their camera flashes exploding in a blinding rhythm, but Marcus's team formed a moving wall, sweeping Andrew and Ethan smoothly up the steps and through the private security entrance.
Inside, the grand marble rotunda was bustling with attorneys, court officers, and public onlookers.
As they approached Courtroom 402 on the fourth floor, a tall, gaunt figure emerged from the side hallway, surrounded by four aggressive-looking defense attorneys.
It was Arthur Vance.
He looked unhinged. His hair was messy, his suit rumpled, and his eyes bloodshot with frantic, desperate energy. Though a federal warrant was active, his lawyers had managed to secure a temporary four-hour judicial immunity pass specifically for this custody deposition.
Ethan flinched instantly, burying his face into Andrew’s neck. "Andrew... it's him," the boy whimpered.
Andrew wrapped his arm around Ethan’s back, shielding him completely, and stopped five feet away from Vance.
"You should have taken the flight to South America, Arthur," Andrew said coldly.
Vance let out a terrible, ragged laugh. "You think you won, Whitman? You think you can just buy this boy with your tech money? That child belongs to a forty-million-dollar trust that my firm controls! You have no legal standing! You're nothing to him! You're not his father!"
"I am the man protecting him from a monster," Andrew replied, his voice calm, heavy, and resonant enough to echo off the marble walls of the corridor. "And as of twenty minutes ago, the United States District Court froze the Miller trust and named Whitman Global Capital as the temporary receiver."
Vance’s face twisted into an expression of pure, animal rage. "You stole my company! You stole my life!"
Before anyone could react, Vance reached into his rumpled coat pocket.
"Vance, no!" screamed one of his own defense attorneys.
Vance pulled out a small, silver revolver, pointing it directly at Andrew’s chest—and at Ethan, who was wrapped in Andrew's arms.
The hallway erupted into screams. Bystanders threw themselves onto the floor. Court officers drew their weapons, screaming commands, but Vance was completely beyond reason.
"If I'm going to prison, Whitman," Vance shrieked, his finger tightening around the trigger, "you're coming with me!"
In that split second, time seemed to freeze for Andrew.
Fifteen months ago, when the wet highway had swallowed Emily and his unborn baby, Andrew had been helpless. He had sat in a wrecked car, unable to stop the dark from taking everything he loved.
Not today. Not ever again.
Andrew didn't step back. He didn't duck.
With a movement born of pure, absolute paternal instinct, Andrew pivoted his entire body, turning his back to the gun and wrapping both arms tightly around Ethan, covering the boy completely with his broad shoulders and heavy wool coat.
CRACK!
A single gunshot echoed wildly through the stone corridor.
Andrew felt a sudden, blinding heat sear across his left shoulder blade as the bullet grazed through his coat and jacket, tearing a red line through his skin before embedding itself deep into the marble pillar behind them.
Before Vance could pull the trigger a second time, Marcus tackled the Director with the force of a freight train. The gun clattered across the slick floor as four court marshals slammed Vance onto the marble, pinning his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
"GET HIM DOWN! GET HIM DOWN!" officers shouted.
The chaos swirled around them, but inside Andrew’s arms, everything was deathly quiet.
Andrew stayed on his knees, his broad back bleeding through his ruined coat, holding Ethan tightly against his chest. His heart was hammering like a war drum.
"Ethan," Andrew gasped, his voice shaking with intense adrenaline. "Ethan... are you hit? Are you okay?"
Ethan pulled back slightly, his wide blue eyes staring at Andrew’s bleeding shoulder in total terror.
"Andrew... you're bleeding!" Ethan cried, tears streaming down his face as his tiny hands reached up to touch Andrew’s cheek. "You took the bullet for me!"
May you like
Andrew let out a ragged, breathless laugh—a laugh full of overwhelming relief, love, and absolute joy. He pulled the boy back against his chest, kissing the top of Ethan’s head again and again.
"I will always take the bullet for you, Ethan," Andrew whispered, tears finally leaking from his own eyes. "Always."
