Chapter 5 - The Claws of the Beast

The public exposure of the Oakridge scandal sent shockwaves across the United States. Within six hours of Andrew’s press conference, federal agents raided the Oakridge Youth Foundation, seizing servers, paper records, and arresting seven staff members. Representative Donald Vance was stripped of his committee assignments by nightfall, and Director Arthur Vance went into hiding, a federal arrest warrant bearing his name.

However, a wounded animal is always most dangerous when cornered.

Three days after the press conference, the penthouse was quiet. The legal battle had shifted into high gear, with Sarah Jenkins coordinating a team of thirty attorneys working around the clock to secure permanent legal guardianship for Andrew over Ethan.

Ethan was thriving. In just seventy-two hours, the color had returned to his cheeks. He had his own room—not the cold, forgotten nursery, but a bright, beautiful corner bedroom overlooking the city park, fitted with an easel, endless art supplies, and a bookshelf packed with adventure novels.

Andrew spent every moment he could away from his office, sitting on the floor with Ethan, teaching him how to sketch landscapes, reading him stories, and listening with quiet marvel as the boy opened up about his dreams of becoming an architect.

"Look, Andrew!" Ethan squealed, holding up a drawing of a massive glass building with a giant garden on the roof. "It's a house where kids who don't have moms can live and play with puppies!"

Andrew looked at the drawing, a genuine wave of pride filling his heart. "That is incredible, Ethan. You know what? We should actually build this."

"Really?" Ethan’s eyes lit up like stars. "Can we build it in Chicago?"

"We can build it wherever you want," Andrew promised, ruffling the boy's dark, messy hair.

Before Ethan could answer, Marcus stepped into the room, looking visibly concerned. He motioned for Andrew to step into the hallway.

"What is it, Marcus?" Andrew asked quietly, closing Ethan’s bedroom door slightly.

"It's about Ethan's biological family," Marcus said, handing him a secure intelligence report. "Our investigators finally managed to unearth the sealed court records regarding Ethan's late uncle, Thomas Miller."

Andrew frowned, reading through the pages. "It says here Thomas died of heart failure two years ago."

"That's what the public death certificate says," Marcus said grimly. "But look at the second page. Thomas Miller didn't just pass away in a hospital. He was the founder of a small, highly valuable green-energy patent firm in Illinois. Before he died, he placed one hundred percent of his corporate shares into a blind trust reserved for Ethan upon his eighteenth birthday."

Andrew’s eyes narrowed into slits. "How much are those shares worth?"

"Currently? Around forty million dollars," Marcus revealed. "And guess who was named the temporary corporate executor of that trust if Ethan was placed in state care?"

The truth hit Andrew like a physical blow. "Arthur Vance."

"Exactly," Marcus said. "Vance didn't just pick Ethan at random off a state list. He deliberately engineered the seizure of Ethan after Thomas died, hid the existence of the inheritance trust, and was planning to sell Ethan overseas so the boy could never claim his forty-million-dollar estate when he grew up!"

Andrew’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth groaned under the pressure. The sheer, calculated evil of Arthur Vance was staggering. It wasn't just human trafficking; it was systematic asset theft wrapped in the murder of a child's future.

"Where is Vance now?" Andrew demanded, his voice dropping into a icy register.

"Federal authorities traced his vehicle to an airfield in Indiana two hours ago," Marcus reported. "He's desperate, Andrew. He knows he's facing thirty years in federal prison. But his legal team just filed an emergency motion in Cook County Court claiming that Ethan's original custody order was falsified, demanding an immediate physical deposition of the child at the courthouse at four o'clock today."

Andrew looked at his watch. It was two-fifteen.

"It's a trap," Andrew said instantly. "He knows if he can get Ethan into a public courthouse corridor, he can create a jurisdictional chaos or force a state protective custody transfer."

"Sarah says if we refuse the judge's summons, it could compromise our guardianship petition," Marcus warned.

Andrew looked through the crack in the door at Ethan, who was happily coloring his dream house on the floor, completely unaware of the dark clouds gathering outside.

"We go to the courthouse," Andrew said, his decision instant and absolute. "We bring forty bodyguards, two legal teams, and federal marshals. We put Ethan in the center of an iron circle. Vance wants a final showdown? Let's give it to him."
