CHAPTER 4 – THE WAR AGAINST THE VALE EMPIRE

Dominic Vale had spent his entire life building walls.

Walls around his company.

Walls around his reputation.

Walls around his heart.

He had built them so high that nobody could reach him.

Not enemies.

Not friends.

Not even family.

But every wall had a weakness.

And Dominic’s weakness was sleeping in the guest room down the hall, holding a broken backpack like it was the only piece of home she had left.

For the first time in twenty years, Dominic was not protecting an empire.

He was protecting a person.

And that changed everything.

By sunrise, Vale Tower was surrounded.

Not by police.

Not by protesters.

By cameras.

Every major news network in Los Angeles had a helicopter above the building.

The headlines were everywhere.

VALE GLOBAL CEO LINKED TO MISSING CHILD INVESTIGATION

MYSTERY GIRL CONNECTED TO YEARS-OLD SHIPPING SCANDAL

DOMINIC VALE: PROTECTOR OR SUSPECT?

Dominic stood in his office watching the city wake up.

A city he had controlled for years.

A city that now wanted to watch him fall.

Behind him, Lily sat at the conference table eating pancakes Maggie had personally delivered from the diner.

Maggie had refused to leave.

Nobody told Maggie what to do.

Not presidents.

Not billionaires.

Not men like Dominic.

“She needs breakfast,” Maggie had said.

Dominic had watched one of the most feared women in Los Angeles walk through armed security carrying a paper bag of pancakes.

Nobody stopped her.

Because everyone knew Maggie.

And everyone knew Dominic.

But today, the world was starting to question which one they should fear.

Lily looked at the television.

“Are they saying bad things about you?”

Dominic looked at the screen.

“Yes.”

“Are they true?”

The question was simple.

The answer was not.

Dominic sat beside her.

“I’ve done bad things.”

Lily looked at him.

“But are you bad?”

The room became quiet.

A question from a child.

A question that lawyers, enemies, and judges had spent years asking.

Dominic had never known how to answer.

Until now.

“I don’t know.”

Lily studied him.

Then she nodded.

“That means you’re trying.”

Dominic almost smiled.

Almost.

The emergency meeting began at 9:00 a.m.

Every senior member of Vale Global was present.

Executives.

Security chiefs.

Legal advisors.

Family members.

The people who had spent years benefiting from Dominic’s power.

Now they sat across from him pretending they were still loyal.

Dominic knew better.

Fear created loyalty.

But pressure revealed truth.

Victor Vale sat at the end of the table.

Calm.

Relaxed.

Like this was a business negotiation.

Not a family war.

“Dominic,” Victor began.

“No.”

Victor stopped.

Dominic placed a file on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Security logs.

Evidence from the previous night.

Alexander’s betrayal.

The unauthorized access.

The hidden operations.

“You don’t get to speak first.”

Nobody moved.

Dominic looked around the room.

“For years, someone inside this organization has been using my name.”

A pause.

“My companies.”

Another pause.

“My resources.”

He looked at Victor.

“To move things I never approved.”

Victor smiled faintly.

“You’re accusing your own family?”

Dominic leaned back.

“I’m investigating my own family.”

The room shifted.

That was the difference.

Accusations created enemies.

Investigations created fear.

Because everyone wondered:

What does he know?

Victor tapped the table.

“You are allowing emotion to cloud your judgment.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Emotion?”

He looked toward the hallway.

Where Lily was protected by two guards.

“The only emotion I have is regret.”

Victor frowned.

“For what?”

“For not seeing it sooner.”

Silence.

At noon, Alexander Reed woke up.

He was being held in one of Vale’s private security rooms.

Not a prison.

Not torture.

Just a room.

Dominic knew something about people.

Pain made them defensive.

Silence made them honest.

When Dominic entered, Alexander looked exhausted.

Not afraid.

That hurt more.

“How long?”

Dominic asked.

Alexander looked down.

“Since the beginning.”

The answer landed like a punch.

“Since the beginning of what?”

“Since you became CEO.”

Dominic stared.

“You worked for me.”

Alexander nodded.

“I did.”

“Then why?”

Alexander took a breath.

“Because someone had to watch you.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

“Watch me?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Alexander looked away.

“My father.”

The silence was immediate.

Dominic’s father had been dead for twelve years.

But somehow…

he was still controlling everything.

“He gave you orders?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Alexander hesitated.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Alex.”

The old nickname.

The one he had not used in years.

Alexander closed his eyes.

“Your father left instructions.”

“What instructions?”

“If anything happened to him…”

Alexander swallowed.

“I was supposed to make sure you became exactly what he wanted.”

Dominic felt cold.

“And what did he want?”

Alexander looked at him.

“A king.”

A pause.

“Not a good man.”

The truth came in pieces.

And each piece hurt more.

Dominic’s father had built the foundation of Vale Global decades earlier.

But behind the legitimate businesses were illegal operations.

Human trafficking routes.

Fake shipping manifests.

Corrupt officials.

Missing children.

The same crimes Dominic believed he had destroyed when he took control.

He had not destroyed them.

He had buried them.

Because someone had cleaned the evidence before he could find it.

Someone had protected him from the truth.

Someone had protected the Vale name.

And that someone…

was everyone around him.

That evening, Elena Cross finally returned.

Dominic met her in an abandoned warehouse near the port.

The same port where his men had died.

The same place where everything began.

She looked different.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Eight years disappeared.

Then came back.

“You’re angry.”

Dominic’s voice was flat.

“Yes.”

“I expected that.”

“You disappeared.”

“I had to.”

“You let me believe you betrayed me.”

Elena looked down.

“I needed you angry.”

Dominic frowned.

“Why?”

“Because if you loved me, you would have looked for me.”

The words hit.

Hard.

“Don’t.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“You would have followed me. You would have exposed yourself. You would have walked into a trap.”

“And instead?”

“You became stronger.”

Dominic laughed quietly.

Bitterly.

“You call this strong?”

Elena looked at him.

“You protected Lily.”

Silence.

“That’s something the old Dominic would never have done.”

The words stayed.

Because they were true.

Elena handed him a small device.

“The final evidence.”

Dominic looked at it.

“What is it?”

“Your father’s confession.”

His face changed.

“He recorded himself?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because men like your father don’t believe they’re wrong.”

She looked away.

“They believe history will forgive them.”

Dominic inserted the device.

The recording began.

A voice filled the warehouse.

His father.

Older.

Cold.

Confident.

“If you are hearing this, Dominic, then either I am dead or someone has finally become brave enough to question me.”

Dominic froze.

“You always hated me because you thought I was cruel.”

A pause.

“But cruelty is not what creates power. Fear does.”

Dominic’s fists tightened.

The voice continued.

“I built the Vale name because this world respects monsters.”

A pause.

“And one day, my son, you will understand that you cannot protect innocence while holding power.”

Dominic stared at the device.

Then the final words came.

“The only mistake I ever made was believing Dominic would become me.”

Silence.

The recording ended.

Elena watched him.

“He was wrong.”

Dominic said nothing.

Because for years, he thought becoming different from his father meant becoming weaker.

He had been wrong.

That night, the attack came.

Not from outside.

Inside.

The lights went out across Vale Tower.

Again.

But this time Dominic was ready.

“Everyone move!”

Security teams responded instantly.

But the attackers were already inside.

Former employees.

People who had been loyal for years.

People who knew every hallway.

Every camera.

Every weakness.

The Vale empire was collapsing from within.

Dominic moved through the darkness.

Protecting Lily.

Not fighting for territory.

Not fighting for revenge.

For the first time in his life…

he was fighting for something worth saving.

A gunshot echoed.

A guard fell.

Dominic reacted.

But before he could reach Lily—

Someone stepped between them.

Maggie.

The old diner owner.

Holding a metal tray.

Everyone stared.

Even Dominic.

“Maggie?”

She looked annoyed.

“I knew you were trouble when you started drinking coffee alone.”

Then she swung the tray.

Hard.

The attacker dropped.

Dominic stared.

“You just attacked an armed man with a serving tray.”

Maggie shrugged.

“I survived three husbands.”

A pause.

“Men with guns are usually easier.”

For the first time in days…

Dominic laughed.

A real laugh.

Small.

Brief.

But real.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice whispered.

“You think you won?”

Dominic recognized it.

Victor.

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere you can’t reach.”

Dominic looked around.

At the damaged tower.

At his broken empire.

At Lily standing behind him.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“You’re wrong.”

“About what?”

“You think I’m trying to save my empire.”

A pause.

“I’m not.”

Dominic looked at Lily.

“I’m trying to destroy everything that made me need one.”

Silence.

Then Victor said:

“You have no idea what’s coming.”

Dominic looked out at Los Angeles.

The storm had finally stopped.

“Neither did I.”

He ended the call.

Because tomorrow would bring the final battle.

Not against enemies.

May you like

Against the name he carried.

The Vale name.
