CHAPTER 3 – THE FAMILY THAT CAME TO TAKE HER BACK

The first rule Dominic Vale had ever learned was simple:

Never let people know what you love.

Because the moment they knew, they knew where to aim.

His father had taught him that.

His enemies had proven it.

And for most of his life, Dominic had followed it perfectly.

Until a seven-year-old girl walked into a diner carrying a broken backpack and a secret hidden in her hair.

Now everyone knew.

They knew Lily mattered.

They knew Dominic Vale had chosen her.

And in Dominic’s world, that made her the most dangerous person in Los Angeles.

At 11:58 p.m., every security system in Vale Tower came back online.

That worried Dominic more than the blackout.

A failure could be explained.

A breach could be investigated.

But a system that restored itself?

That meant someone wanted him to know they had control.

He stood in the center of his office, staring at the message still glowing on his phone.

RETURN THE GIRL BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

No name.

No signature.

No threat.

Just an order.

Dominic hated orders.

Especially from people who believed he would obey.

Behind him, Lily shifted in her sleep.

The sound was small.

Almost nothing.

But Dominic heard it immediately.

He turned.

She was sitting up.

Eyes half-open.

The nightmare had pulled her awake.

For a moment, she looked confused.

Then she saw him.

And relaxed.

That tiny reaction bothered Dominic more than any weapon pointed at him.

Because trust was dangerous.

Trust meant someone believed you would not hurt them.

And Dominic Vale had spent years proving that people should not believe that.

“You’re awake,” he said.

Lily nodded.

“Did they find us?”

The question was immediate.

No good morning.

No where am I.

Just:

Did they find us?

Dominic walked closer.

“Not yet.”

She studied his face.

“You’re lying.”

He stopped.

“You’re very good at noticing things.”

“My mom said people lie with their mouths, but their eyes forget.”

Dominic looked away.

Because he had spent years controlling his words.

But his eyes?

Apparently, even a child could read those.

“Are you scared?” Lily asked.

Dominic almost answered automatically.

No.

But he stopped.

Because she deserved honesty.

“Yes.”

Her eyes widened.

“Of them?”

He looked toward the dark windows of the city.

“No.”

“Then what?”

Dominic looked at the little girl standing in his office wearing his coat.

“I’m scared of what happens if I’m wrong.”

Lily was quiet.

Then she said something he never expected.

“My mom said good people are scared.”

Dominic frowned.

“Your mother thinks I’m good?”

“She thinks you can be.”

Those words stayed with him.

Can be.

Not are.

Not were.

Can be.

A possibility.

A choice.

Something he had forgotten existed.

The elevator doors opened at exactly midnight.

No announcement.

No security alert.

No warning.

Just a quiet arrival.

Dominic reached for the weapon beneath his desk.

Then stopped.

Because the person walking into his office was not a stranger.

It was family.

Victor Vale.

Dominic’s uncle.

Seventy years old.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

A man who had attended charity galas, political dinners, and funeral services with the same expression.

Calm.

Respectable.

Controlled.

The kind of man strangers trusted.

The kind of man Dominic never did.

Behind him came three men.

Armed.

Professional.

And behind them…

A woman.

Dominic recognized her immediately.

Evelyn Vale.

His aunt.

His father’s younger sister.

The woman who had raised him after his mother died.

The woman who had told him, at sixteen years old:

“Love makes men weak, Dominic. Power is what keeps you alive.”

He stared at them.

“You broke into my building.”

Victor smiled.

“Family does not break in.”

Dominic’s voice was cold.

“Then what do you call entering armed without permission?”

“Concern.”

“Concern usually knocks.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

Her eyes moved past him.

To Lily.

The change was subtle.

But Dominic saw it.

Everyone looked at Lily differently.

Some saw a child.

Some saw a problem.

Some saw a weapon.

Evelyn saw an asset.

Dominic hated her immediately.

“Where is her mother?” Evelyn asked.

Dominic did not answer.

Victor sighed.

“You always were difficult.”

“And you always were dishonest.”

The room became silent.

Victor smiled.

“Careful.”

Dominic laughed quietly.

There was no humor in it.

“That word again.”

He looked at the men behind them.

“Everyone thinks warning me is the same as controlling me.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“Dominic.”

“No.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“You came here because you’re afraid.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“Afraid of what?”

“That I’ll find out why everyone suddenly cares about one little girl.”

Silence.

A dangerous silence.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“You don’t understand what she is.”

Dominic looked at her.

“She’s a child.”

“No.”

Evelyn’s voice was calm.

“She is evidence.”

Lily froze.

Dominic noticed.

He moved slightly in front of her.

“Choose your next words carefully.”

Evelyn smiled.

“There he is.”

“What?”

“The man pretending he doesn’t care.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“You know nothing about me.”

“Oh, Dominic.”

She stepped closer.

“I know everything.”

That was the problem.

Family always knew where the wounds were.

The conversation ended when the security doors locked.

Not from Dominic.

From the outside.

Everyone looked up.

Victor checked his phone.

Then smiled.

“Too late.”

Dominic turned slowly.

“What did you do?”

Victor looked almost disappointed.

“Your biggest mistake was thinking this was about taking the girl.”

A pause.

“It’s about taking back what belongs to the Vale family.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“What belongs to you?”

Victor looked at Lily.

“The truth.”

Ten minutes later, Dominic learned the truth.

Not all of it.

But enough.

The gray bead in Lily’s braid was not just storage.

It contained a biometric encryption key.

A key created by Elena Cross.

A key connected to files hidden years ago.

Files about the Vale organization.

Files about Dominic’s father.

Files about operations Dominic had spent his entire life believing he had escaped.

But the worst part?

The files had been created inside Vale Tower.

Using Dominic’s own company servers.

Meaning someone inside his empire had known.

Someone had hidden the truth.

Someone had protected the secret.

Someone had waited.

Dominic stared at the encrypted data on the screen.

“Why didn’t my father destroy this?”

Victor laughed softly.

“Because your father was arrogant.”

“He thought he was untouchable.”

Dominic said nothing.

Because that sounded exactly like him.

Victor continued.

“He believed you would eventually become him.”

The words hit.

Harder than Dominic expected.

“He was wrong.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

He looked at Dominic.

“He was right.”

The room went quiet.

Dominic hated that part.

Because deep down, that was the fear he never admitted.

That everything he hated about his father lived somewhere inside him.

The anger.

The control.

The coldness.

The willingness to do whatever was necessary.

Maybe monsters were not born.

Maybe they were inherited.

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A gunshot.

Everyone moved.

Except Lily.

She screamed.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

“The bathroom!”

Dominic turned.

“What?”

“The window!”

She grabbed his hand.

“He came through the bathroom window before!”

Dominic understood instantly.

Someone else was inside.

Not Victor.

Not Evelyn.

Someone they had missed.

A professional.

Dominic moved.

Fast.

He reached the hallway as a shadow moved.

A man in black.

Face covered.

Weapon raised.

The man aimed at Lily.

Dominic did not think.

He moved.

The shot fired.

The bullet hit the wall.

Dominic reached him before he could fire again.

The fight lasted seconds.

Not because Dominic was stronger.

Because he had spent his entire life learning how people tried to kill him.

The attacker hit the ground.

Dominic removed the mask.

And froze.

Because he knew him.

Everyone in the room knew him.

Alexander Reed.

His closest advisor.

His friend.

The man who had stood beside him for fifteen years.

The man who had looked him in the eyes earlier and said:

I don’t know her.

Dominic stared.

The betrayal was not the weapon.

It was the familiarity.

“Why?”

Alexander looked exhausted.

Not evil.

That almost made it worse.

“Because you don’t understand.”

Dominic’s voice was quiet.

“Then explain.”

Alexander looked at Lily.

“She was never supposed to reach you.”

Dominic felt something break inside him.

“What?”

“Her mother planned everything.”

Alexander swallowed.

“She knew you would protect her.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“You knew Elena?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“Eight years.”

The room went silent.

Eight years.

The same amount of time Elena had been gone.

Eight years of friendship.

Eight years of trust.

Eight years of lies.

Dominic looked at the people around him.

His family.

His closest friend.

His enemies.

Everyone had known something.

Everyone except him.

Then Lily spoke.

A small voice.

But it stopped everyone.

“My mom said the worst monsters are the ones who think they’re saving you.”

Dominic looked at her.

And suddenly he understood.

Everyone in this room believed they were protecting something.

The Vale family.

The empire.

The truth.

The legacy.

But nobody was protecting the child.

Except him.

Dominic turned toward Victor.

“You came to take her.”

Victor said nothing.

“You came to use her.”

Silence.

Dominic looked at Alexander.

“You lied to me.”

Alexander lowered his eyes.

Then Dominic said the words that changed everything.

“She stays.”

Nobody moved.

Victor stared.

“Dominic—”

“She stays.”

His voice became colder.

Not because he was becoming the monster.

Because he was finally choosing what kind of man he wanted to be.

“She is not evidence.”

A pause.

“She is not a secret.”

Another pause.

“She is not a Vale possession.”

He looked at Lily.

“She is a child.”

And then he looked at his family.

“And if any of you come near her again…”

The room went silent.

“Then you come through me.”

Outside, the rain continued.

But somewhere in Los Angeles, someone was watching.

Someone who had been waiting years for Dominic Vale to make this choice.

A woman stood in a dark apartment, watching the news feed on her laptop.

On the screen:

DOMINIC VALE PROTECTS MISSING CHILD CONNECTED TO MAJOR INVESTIGATION

She smiled sadly.

Because she knew something nobody else knew.

Dominic had just started a war.

And he had no idea who the real enemy was.

Because the person who destroyed the Vale family…

May you like

was not outside it.

It was born inside it.
