Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Light

Autumn returned to Chicago, painting the oak trees in vibrant shades of gold, amber, and crimson.

It was a crisp, clear Friday evening. The air smelled of woodsmoke and fallen leaves.

In the living room of Claire’s house, the yellow glow of the fireplace cast warm, flickering shadows across the walls. A small fire crackled softly in the hearth.

Owen sat on the soft rug in front of the fire, building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks with Chief Mark. Barnaby the golden retriever lay curled up beside them, fast asleep on his dog bed.

Claire walked into the room carrying a tray with three mugs of hot cider and a plate of fresh apple cinnamon muffins.

She set the tray on the coffee table, handing a mug to Mark and one to Owen.

"Thanks, Mom," Owen said, taking a small sip of the warm cider and blowing on the steam.

He carefully placed the final wooden tower on top of his castle, stepping back to admire his creation.

"Look, Mom! It’s fortified!" Owen said proudly. "Nothing can break the walls!"

Claire sat down on the rug beside him, pulling him close against her side. She looked at the fireplace, then at the bookshelf where the photograph of them in the sunflower field hung beside his new baseball trophy.

The five years of dark, terrifying silence were gone, replaced by the quiet, steady rhythm of home.

The cold glass doors, the torn pant leg, the broken bone, and the frightened whisper in the ER had all transformed into a bright, unbreakable future.

Owen leaned his head against Claire's shoulder, his breath warm and even, his fingers lightly touching the edge of her sleeve.

"Mom?" Owen whispered softly as the fire crackled in the hearth.

"Yes, baby?"

"I’m really glad I kept those twelve dollars."

Claire closed her eyes, resting her cheek against his soft hair, holding her son tight in the warm, safe light of their home.

"Me too, Owen," Claire whispered. "Me too."

Outside, the autumn wind rustled the leaves in the big oak tree, but inside the house, the light remained warm, steady, and completely unbroken.
