Chapter 9 - The New Chapter

The grand opening of Bennett Brand Consulting—my very own independent marketing agency—was held on a brilliant, sun-drenched Friday evening in downtown Portland.
The office was packed with local business leaders, loyal clients, close friends, and mentors who had stood by my side through the darkest winter of my life. The air buzzed with laughter, the clinking of champagne flutes, and the unmistakable energy of a fresh, unhindered beginning.
I wore a sharp, emerald-green silk dress—a color I had chosen specifically because it represented renewal and vitality—and walked among the guests with a confident, effortless grace. The physical scars from the crash had faded into faint, silvery lines, easily concealed, but the emotional scars had transformed into something entirely different: armor.
Mr. Harrison walked over, raising his glass in a silent toast. "To new horizons, Claire. You built an empire out of the wreckage."
"Thank you, Mr. Harrison," I replied, clinking my glass against his. "I realized something important this year: surviving a disaster isn't just about making it out alive. It's about refusing to let the people who tried to destroy you write the end of your story."
Later in the evening, as the crowd thinned out and the golden twilight poured through the massive industrial windows of the office, I walked out onto the private balcony.
The city lights of Portland were beginning to flicker on across the skyline, illuminating the bridges that spanned the river in brilliant arcs of neon and steel.

I looked down at my left hand. The heavy diamond wedding ring was long gone, melted down and sold off months ago to help fund a scholarship program for domestic abuse survivors. In its place, on my right hand, sat a simple, elegant platinum band I had bought for myself—a symbol of a vow I had made to the only person who truly mattered.
A vow to never, ever abandon myself again.
