Chapter 10 - Unshackled

One year to the day after our wedding limousine crashed into the intersection outside Saint Matthew’s Church, I woke up in my own bed, bathed in the warm, golden light of an early summer morning.

There was no lingering dread, no heavy heart, and no shadow of the past.

I got up, brewed a cup of black coffee, and walked out onto my balcony, breathing in the crisp, clean air of the Pacific Northwest.

My phone buzzed on the patio table. It was a notification from my bank, confirming the final liquidation and transfer of all remaining assets from Ethan’s seized corporate accounts directly into my business growth fund. The chapter was officially, legally, and permanently closed.

I smiled, looking out over the sprawling, beautiful city where I had lost everything—and where I had ultimately found myself.

The wedding day had tried to become my funeral. But standing here today, breathing deep and stepping fearlessly into the light, I knew the truth.

I hadn't died in that limousine.

I had only just begun to live.
