Chapter 5 - The Frozen Paradise

On Thursday afternoon, Grant, Elaine, and Brooke walked into the high-end boutique district of Bal Harbour, Miami. Elaine was wearing a three-thousand-dollar silk dress she had picked out at Gucci, while Brooke was carrying three bags from Cartier.

"Let's get those diamond earrings we saw yesterday, Grant," Elaine cooed, patting her son's arm. "You said you wanted to buy me a thank-you gift for always being your biggest supporter."

"Anything you want, Mom," Grant beamed, puffing out his chest as he walked up to the velvet rope outside the jewelry store. "I'll pay with the black card."

Inside the store, the sales associate poured three glasses of champagne while Grant handed over his primary corporate credit card to process the $35,000 purchase.

The associate ran the card through the terminal. A sharp, red error message flashed across the screen: TRANSACTION DECLINED - CONTACT ISSUING BANK.

Grant frowned, pulling out his wallet. "Ah, must be a daily limit flag because we're out of state. Let me use the secondary line."

He handed over the card linked to the household account.

Again, a loud beep echoed through the quiet boutique: CARD REVOKED - ACCOUNT FROZEN BY COURT ORDER.

Grant’s face flushed red. "What is the meaning of this? There is over one hundred thousand dollars in that account!"

Elaine chuckled nervously, waving her hand. "Grant, dear, try your Nevada LLC card."

Grant pulled out the sleek platinum card for Vance Family Holdings LLC. The associate ran it through.

The screen flashed a different message this time: ACCOUNT SEIZED - LEGAL HOLD ENFORCED BY US DISTRICT COURT.

Before Grant could process the words on the terminal screen, his phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket. It wasn't one call—it was a barrage of text messages, email alerts, and missed calls from his bank, his office assistant, and his brother-in-law, Mark.

Grant answered Mark’s call, stepping away from the counter, his heart beginning to hammer against his ribs.

"Grant! Where the hell have you been?!" Mark screamed through the speaker, his voice hysterical. "The police kicked me out of the house yesterday! Lena sold Cedar Ridge! She sold the entire estate to a corporate developer!"

Grant froze, the glass of champagne nearly slipping from his fingers. "What... what did you just say?"

"She sold the house!" Mark yelled. "Apex Capital owns it now! They changed the gates, they changed the locks, and there are armed guards stationed at the driveway! And that's not all—federal marshals served a asset freeze order on your office in downtown Boulder two hours ago! They seized your server logs and locked your firm’s bank accounts!"

Grant felt the world tilt on its axis. The luxurious, sun-drenched street of Bal Harbour suddenly felt like a suffocating cage.

"No..." Grant stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "No, she can't do that! Cedar Ridge is our marital home! She needs my signature to sell it!"

"She owned it before she met you, you idiot!" Mark shrieked. "The prenup holds! She signed an expedited cash deal! The earnest deposit was cleared yesterday, and the full closing is taking place on Monday! You have nothing left in Boulder, Grant! Nothing!"

Elaine walked over, her face twisted in concern. "Grant? What's wrong? Why did the card decline?"

Grant slowly lowered his phone, looking at his mother and sister with wide, terrified eyes. The fortress of wealth, power, and authority he thought he had constructed by locking his wife out in the rain had just crumbled into dust in less than forty-eight hours.
