Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Freedom

On Ava’s first birthday, the weather was absolute perfection.

We celebrated with a small, intimate garden party on the stone terrace of our mountain estate. There were no fake relatives, no greedy in-laws, no grandstanding, and no hidden agendas. Just Nora, Rachel, Thomas Thorne, a few close friends from my software company, and their children.

The garden was filled with pastel balloons, fresh wildflowers, and gentle acoustic music. A simple homemade organic blueberry cake sat on the central table, decorated with a single lit candle.

I picked up Ava, holding her close against my chest. She wore a simple white linen dress, her small arms wrapped tightly around my neck, her dark eyes sparkling with happiness and trust.

"Make a wish, Lena," Nora called out, holding up her camera to capture the moment.

I looked at my daughter, feeling the steady, healthy rhythm of her breathing, remembering the freezing rain outside Cedar Ridge one year ago, and the long, terrifying journey it had taken to secure our freedom.

I didn't need to make a wish. Everything I had ever fought for—safety, independence, truth, and unconditional love—was already standing right here in my arms.

"Happy birthday, my sweet Ava," I whispered, leaning down to kiss her cheek.

Ava giggled, leaning forward with me as we blew out the single candle together.

The crowd cheered, clapping warmly under the vast, open mountain sky. I looked out over the endless green horizon, knowing with absolute certainty that the path ahead of us was bright, beautiful, and entirely ours to write.
