Chapter 4 - The Legal Backlash

The pediatric wing dissolved into a chaotic domestic warzone, but I didn't stay to watch the final blows. I turned on my heel and walked toward the administrative boardroom, my white coat billowing behind me. My hands were entirely steady. The old wound that Connor had picked at for nearly a decade hadn't just healed; it had turned into solid armor.

The next morning, the fallout reached my private office at the hospital.

I was reviewing a pre-op chart when a knock sounded on my door. It was Victoria Vance, the head of our hospital's legal counsel and, coincidentally, Julian Vance’s sister. The world of high-society professional elites in this city was incredibly small, a fact that Melinda had tragically overlooked.

"Kirsten," Victoria said, closing the heavy oak door behind her. She looked sharp, her tailored suit immaculate, a thick legal folder tucked under her arm. "I assume you heard what happened after you left the hallway yesterday?"

"I heard shouting, but I had a surgery to prep for," I replied, offering her a chair. "What’s the damage?"

"Julian took the baby and left with his security detail," Victoria explained, a grim, satisfied smile on her face. "He’s already filed for sole emergency custody. But more importantly for you... during their screaming match in the parking lot, Connor admitted to several financial discrepancies. He screamed at Melinda that he had risked his entire career to skim funds from your joint marital accounts during your divorce to pay for her downtown apartment."

My pen stopped mid-air. I looked up at Victoria. "He did what?"

"When you two divorced last year, Connor claimed his logistics firm was facing a massive downturn, reducing your alimony and your share of the corporate stocks by nearly sixty percent," Victoria said, opening the folder to reveal a stack of fresh forensic accounting audits. "Julian’s financial team did a deep dive into Melinda’s banking history last night to prepare for the custody battle. They found a series of shell corporations registered in Delaware. Connor was routing your shared marital assets into those accounts to hide them from the divorce court, then using them to fund Melinda’s lifestyle."

A slow, cold anger began to replace the calm amusement I had felt the day before. Connor hadn't just cheated on me with my best friend; he had actively stolen from me, using my own hard-earned money to finance the very lie he used to humiliate me.

"Can we prove it?" I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"With these records? Absolutely," Victoria said, tapping the folder. "This constitutes absolute family court fraud, perjury, and grand larceny. We can reopen the divorce settlement within twenty-four hours. Kirsten, you aren't just going to get your money back. You have enough leverage here to strip Connor Fleming of his executive position, his home, and his entire financial standing."

"Do it," I said, without a second of hesitation. "He wanted a performance yesterday. Let's give him a real trial."
