Chapter 2 - The Sound of Shattered Glass

The air inside the pediatric wing grew colder by the second. Connor’s jaw remained tightly clenched, his eyes drilling into me, demanding the breakdown I refused to give him. He expected me to be a hollow shell of a woman, broken by the reminder of my empty womb and his sudden, miraculous fatherhood.
"You always did think you were smarter than everyone else, Kirsten," Connor sneered, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that still carried over the hushed murmurs of the waiting room. "But look at you now. Still hiding behind that white coat, completely alone, while I actually have a legacy. A real son."
Before I could answer, the heavy double doors at the end of the corridor hissed open.
The sound of firm, measured footsteps echoed against the polished linoleum. A man in his late thirties walked into the light. He wasn't dressed in the flashy, attention-seeking designer labels that Connor favored. He wore a crisp, tailored charcoal suit, his presence commanding the room without a single spoken word. His face was sharp, defined by an intense, unwavering focus, and his dark eyes swept the hallway until they landed precisely on our group.
Beside me, Melinda let out a sharp, choked gasp.
The plastic baby bottle she had been clutching slipped from her trembling fingers. It hit the hard floor with a dull thud, the milk splattering across Connor’s polished leather shoes. The tiny plastic cap rolled until it hit the wheel of the stroller.
Connor jumped back, swearing under his breath as he looked down at his ruined footwear. "Melinda! What the hell is wrong with you? Can't you even hold a—"
He stopped. He followed Melinda’s frozen, terrified gaze toward the approaching stranger.
The man walked past the nurses' station, ignoring the chart-laden desks, and stopped exactly three feet from the stroller. He didn't look at Connor. He didn't look at me. He looked down at the little boy with the soft blond hair and blue eyes. A complex, painful emotion flickered across his face before hardening into absolute resolve.
"Hello, Melinda," the man said. His voice was deep, smooth, and completely devoid of fear.
Melinda looked like she was about to faint. Her skin had turned a translucent, ghostly white, and she reached out to grip the handle of the stroller just to keep herself upright. "Julian... what... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be in Chicago."
"My flight got in early," Julian replied calmly. He finally raised his eyes, fixing them on Melinda with a terrifying clarity. "And it’s a good thing it did. Because when I called your apartment and your roommate told me you were at St. Jude Memorial for the baby's checkup, she also mentioned you were here with him."
Connor stepped forward, puffing out his chest, his corporate-exec arrogance flaring up instantly. "Who the hell are you? And why are you talking to my fiancée like you know her?"
Julian slowly turned his head to look at Connor. The contrast between them was staggering. Connor was loud, performative, and desperate for validation; Julian was an absolute monolith of quiet control.
"Your fiancée?" Julian asked, a cold, humorless smile touching his lips. "That's interesting. Because according to the lease on her luxury apartment downtown—which my investment firm pays for—and according to the medical co-pays for this very hospital visit, Melinda is my partner. And more importantly..."
Julian stepped closer, his shadow falling completely over Connor.
"...that boy in the stroller is my son."

The silence that followed was absolute. The nurse behind the desk completely stopped typing. The mother with the clipboard sat with her mouth wide open.
Connor blinked, his smug smile freezing into a grotesque, panicked mask. "What... what did you just say?"
