Chapter 4: Reckoning

Summer brought intensified legal pressure. The Attorney General’s office filed formal charges against Brett and the involved clinic staff. Civil suits proceeded in parallel. Brett’s firm distanced itself, citing reputational risk. Eleanor’s social standing eroded as old allies pulled away.
A pivotal deposition saw Melissa testify under oath. She broke down, admitting Brett had lied to her about the consent. While it didn’t absolve her entirely, it strengthened Hannah’s case significantly.
Brett finally cracked during a mediation session. “I was desperate for a family. You were falling apart, Hannah. I thought… I thought this was the only way.”
His words were recorded. They would haunt him in court.
Eleanor confronted Hannah one final time at a charity gala both attended. “You’ve destroyed my family.”
“No, Eleanor,” Hannah replied. “Your son did that when he chose deception over honor.”
