Chapter 2: Fractured Alliances

The next weeks became a whirlwind of legal filings, media leaks, and private reckonings. Hannah’s attorney, Rebecca Lang, was a force of nature—sharp, strategic, and deeply invested in reproductive rights cases. Together they built a case that expanded beyond the embryos to emotional damages, breach of marital trust, and potential criminal fraud.

Brett’s legal team pushed back hard. They claimed Hannah had verbally consented during the marriage, that the divorce papers implicitly covered all joint assets, including cryopreserved embryos. It was a weak argument, and everyone knew it.

Eleanor became a constant presence in the background, pulling strings. She called in favors from old family friends, tried to discredit Hannah in social circles, and even suggested to Melissa that they present a united front as “victims of a vindictive ex.”

Melissa, however, was cracking. Late one night, she showed up at Hannah’s apartment unannounced, baby Lily asleep in her carrier. Rain soaked her coat, and her eyes were red.

“Hannah… I didn’t know. Not at first. Brett said you had agreed, that it was part of the settlement. By the time I realized the truth, Lily was already here. She’s innocent in all this.”

Hannah let her in, more out of exhaustion than forgiveness. They sat across from each other in the small living room. Lily stirred, letting out a soft coo. The sound pierced Hannah’s heart—those were her genetics, her potential child, now in another woman’s arms.

“I loved you like a sister,” Hannah said finally. “And you helped destroy my life.”

Melissa cried. “I thought I was helping him through his pain. It became more. I’m so sorry.”

The conversation ended without resolution, but Melissa left a folder of her own communications with Brett—texts that showed his manipulation. It was valuable evidence.

Sophie arrived the next day, bringing energy and outrage. The sisters spent evenings reviewing documents, eating takeout, and occasionally allowing themselves moments of dark humor. Hannah began seeing a therapist specializing in betrayal trauma. Slowly, she rebuilt her sense of self.

The media storm intensified when a local reporter broke the story. Headlines ranged from sympathetic to salacious: “Embryo Heist: Ex-Husband’s Shocking Betrayal” and “Portland Socialite Family Faces Fraud Allegations.”

Brett confronted Hannah outside the courthouse after a hearing. “You’re ruining lives, Hannah. Lily doesn’t deserve this.”

“Neither did the children we lost,” she replied steadily. “Neither did I.”

His face twisted with anger and something like regret, but he walked away when cameras appeared.
