Chapter 6 - The Unsealing

Two weeks later, the Hamilton County Probate Court held a private hearing in Judicial Chamber 3B.

Judge Margaret Lawson—a formidable woman with sharp silver hair and thirty years of probate experience—sat behind her elevated wooden bench, reviewing the sealed escrow box delivered directly from the law firm in Cincinnati.

Present in the courtroom were Celeste, Renee, Noah, Eleanor Vance, myself, Richard Brooks, Elaine Brooks, and their attorney.

The silence in the courtroom was suffocating.

Judge Lawson picked up a brass letter opener, sliced through the red wax seal on the black metal box, and pulled out the original 1995 adoption intake ledger for File #95-B.

For ten minutes, the judge read through the yellowed pages in complete silence. Her brow furrowed deeper with every page she turned.

Finally, Judge Lawson set the papers down, adjusted her reading glasses, and looked directly down at Elaine and Richard Brooks.

"In my thirty years on the bench," Judge Lawson said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, terrifying authority, "I have rarely witnessed such a flagrant, dishonest abuse of the legal adoption system."

Elaine gripped Richard's arm, her knuckles turning white.

"The records in this box," Judge Lawson continued, "contain explicit, written correspondence between Arthur Sterling and Mrs. Elaine Brooks dated July 3, 1995. In these letters, Mrs. Brooks explicitly acknowledges that Celeste Carter had filed a formal revocation of consent within the legal thirty-day window."

Celeste let out a quiet, trembling breath, covering her mouth with her hand. Noah wrapped a supportive arm around her shoulders.

"Furthermore," Judge Lawson declared, "there is a copy of a cashier's check drawn from Richard Brooks' personal account in the amount of $185,000, deposited directly into Arthur Sterling's private offshore account twenty-four hours before the default adoption decree was signed."

Judge Lawson slammed her heavy wooden gavel onto the sound block.

THUD.

"The court hereby issues the following binding orders:"

The 1995 adoption decree regarding Maya Carter-Brooks is declared NULL AND VOID ab initio due to gross fraud and illegal conversion.

The State Department of Vital Statistics is ordered to issue a corrected birth certificate listing Celeste Marie Carter as Maya's sole biological mother.

The court refers the financial records of Hope Harbor Services and Richard Brooks to the Office of the State Attorney General for criminal investigation regarding fraudulent conversion and falsification of public records.

A permanent order of protection is issued prohibiting Elaine Brooks and Richard Brooks from coming within 500 feet of Maya Carter or Celeste Carter.

Elaine collapsed back into her chair, letting out a strangled, breathless cry of defeat. Richard buried his face in his hands, weeping quietly as his lawyer tried to comfort him.

I sat at the plaintiff's table, feeling a strange, glorious sensation wash over my body.

It wasn't victory or revenge.

May you like

It was freedom.

The forty-pound weight of living a lie had been lifted off my chest forever.
