Chapter 4 - The War of Words

The news of my decision didn't take long to reach the Brooks household.

By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, my phone was ringing incessantly.

Elaine had tried calling seven times. When I didn't answer, she sent a string of furious, manipulative text messages:

[Elaine]: Maya, your father told me about your ridiculous display at the hospital. You are being manipulated by a greedy woman who only surfaced because she knows you have an inheritance coming from your grandfather's estate! Call me immediately before you ruin this family!

[Elaine]: If you do not answer this phone in ten minutes, I will cut off your supplemental health insurance policy through your father's firm!

[Elaine]: You are an ungrateful child. We gave you everything, and this is how you repay us? By associating with a woman who sold you for money thirty years ago?!

I sat at my kitchen counter, reading the messages with a calm, detachment that surprised even me.

Six months ago, a single text like that from Elaine would have sent me into a panic, begging for her forgiveness. Now, her threats looked pathetic—the frantic flailing of a bully losing control of her puppet.

I forwarded all the text messages to Eleanor Vance, a high-profile family law attorney whom Renee had retained for us the previous evening.

At 10:00 a.m., Eleanor Vance arrived at my apartment. She was a formidable woman in her late fifties, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, carrying a leather briefcase that looked like a weapon.

"Good morning, Maya," Eleanor said, setting her briefcase on the table. "I've reviewed the documents Celeste provided, along with the text messages your adoptive mother sent you this morning."

"Is Elaine right about the health insurance?" I asked.

Eleanor smiled—a cold, razor-thin smile.

"Mrs. Brooks is operating under the delusion that she still holds power over you," Eleanor said smoothly. "First of all, you are thirty-one years old and employed full-time; your supplemental coverage was already fully vested during your medical leave. She cannot legally revoke it. Second, her text message claiming Celeste 'sold you' is direct evidence of intentional slander and criminal defamation."

"What is our first legal move?" I asked.

"We file an emergency petition in the Hamilton County Probate Court to unseal your original adoption records," Eleanor stated, pulling out a set of legal petitions. "Simultaneously, we serve Richard and Elaine Brooks with a formal Litigation Hold notice, instructing them that any destruction of bank records, communications, or agency receipts from 1995 will result in immediate criminal contempt charges."

"What about the public fallout?" I asked. Richard was a senior partner at a major accounting firm in Columbus, and Elaine was the president of the local Historical Preservation Society. Their social standing was everything to them.

"Elaine Brooks built her life on a throne of stolen prestige," Eleanor said, handing me a pen. "It's time to let the public see the foundation."

I took the pen and signed my name at the bottom of the petition:

MAYA CARTER-BROOKS.

For the first time in my life, I added my birth mother's surname to my signature.

Two hours later, Process Server David Miller drove to the gated community of Oakridge Estates, carrying two brightly colored court summonses.

The battle had officially begun.
