Chapter 9 - The New Era

One year later.

The Calder Freight Headquarters sat in a sparkling new glass skyscraper overlooking the Chicago River.

Vincent Calder sat behind his executive desk, reviewing quarterly earnings for his clean shipping logistics network. The company was thriving, setting records for ethical business practices and employee benefits in the Midwest.

A knock sounded at his office door.

“Come in,” Vincent called out.

The door opened, and Marco walked in. He was no longer wearing a shoulder holster under a leather jacket; he was wearing a sharp, dark corporate suit, acting as the head of corporate security.

“Mr. Calder,” Marco said, setting a folder on the desk. “The final reports from the city council are in. The non-profit youth center you and Mrs. Calder funded in the South Side is officially opening next week.”

Vincent smiled, leaning back in his chair. “Good. Make sure the staff at the Lakeside Diner are invited. Emma wants them to have front-row seats.”

“Understood, sir,” Marco smiled. He paused, looking at his boss with a warmth built over years of service. “It suits you, Vincent. The clean life.”

“It suits my family, Marco,” Vincent replied smoothly. “That’s all that matters.”

Suddenly, the private elevator behind the office chimed.

The doors slid open, and Noah came running out, holding a model sailboat. “Dad! Look! Mom bought me a boat that floats!”

Vincent’s face lit up instantly. He stood up from his desk, walking out from behind it and catching Noah as the boy ran into his arms, lifting him high into the air.

“A floating boat? That sounds like a serious investment, Noah,” Vincent chuckled, setting him down.

Emma stepped out of the elevator behind Noah.

She was radiant, wearing a simple yellow summer dress, her skin glowing with health and happiness. But as Vincent looked at her, his eyes widened slightly.

Emma was holding her stomach, a soft, secret smile playing on her lips.

Vincent froze. He looked at her hand on her stomach, then up into her bright blue eyes.

“Emma?” he whispered, his heart stopping.

Emma walked up to him, taking his hands and placing them gently over her abdomen.

“We went to the doctor this morning, Vincent,” Emma whispered, her eyes shining with joyous tears. “The damage from your old injuries… the doctors said it was impossible. But… they were wrong.”

Vincent stared at her, completely speechles. The man who had faced down rival armies, bullets, and ruthless empires was rendered utterly speechless.

“You’re… you’re pregnant?” Vincent rasped, his hands trembling against her stomach.

“I’m twelve weeks along,” Emma smiled, tears running down her cheeks. “Noah is going to be a big brother.”

Noah jumped up and down. “I’m gonna teach the baby how to play soccer!”

Vincent dropped to his knees in front of Emma, burying his face against her stomach. He let out a breathless, choked laugh, tears flowing freely from his eyes.

For years, he had been told he was hollow—a man who could never leave a bloodline, a man cursed to die alone in the dark. And now, the single mother who had walked into his house with snow on her boots had given him everything: a clean life, a devoted son, and now, a miracle.

He wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, kissing her stomach over and over again.

“Thank you,” Vincent wept softly against her dress. “Thank you, my love.”

Emma ran her fingers through his dark hair, looking down at her husband with complete, overwhelming love.
