Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

The ballroom descended into chaotic murmurs. Security guards drew their weapons, pointing them at the intruder. Salvatore Rossetti smirked, stepping back to watch the show, sensing an immediate opportunity to destroy Vincent’s standing.
Daniel looked pathetic. His designer jacket was torn, his face bruised, and his eyes wild with terror and greed. He locked eyes with Emma in her emerald gown and brilliant diamonds, his jaw dropping in absolute shock.
“Emma? What the hell is this?” Daniel yelled, struggling against the two Calder guards holding his arms behind his back. “I went to the house—they said you were living with him! You’re sleeping with the mob boss who tried to kill me?!”
Vincent didn't move an inch, but the aura of death surrounding him amplified tenfold. He slowly turned his head to look at Emma. His face was a mask of unreadable stone.
“Is this the ghost from your past, Emma?” Vincent asked softly, his voice low enough that only she could hear.
“Yes,” Emma whispered, her hands shaking within her satin gloves. “He… he was supposed to be in Miami.”
Daniel was dragged into the center of the ballroom floor. The head of Vincent’s security team, a brutal man named Marco, pushed Daniel to his knees.
“Mr. Calder,” Marco reported sharply. “We caught this bug trying to break into the private security room downstairs. He was trying to sell security bypass codes to Rossetti’s crew.”
The room collective gasped. A treasonous act right in the middle of a summit.
Rossetti’s eyes flared with anger at being named, though he quickly masked it with a sneer. “The boy is lying! I’ve never seen him before in my life!”
Daniel screamed, looking frantically around the room until his eyes landed on Emma again. “Emma! Help me! We have a kid together! You can’t let them kill me! Tell him to let me go!”
Emma felt the gazes of fifty powerful, ruthless people bore into her back. Salvatore Rossetti was watching her like a hawk, waiting for her to break, waiting for her to show weakness, to beg for her ex-lover's life, to prove that this whole family narrative was a fragile lie.
Vincent stepped forward, standing right beside Emma. He did not look at Daniel; he looked down at her.
“He broke into my domain. He endangered my operations. And he forged your name to a death warrant,” Vincent said, his voice smooth, dark, and dangerous. “The decision is yours, Mrs. Calder. How shall I dispose of your past?”
This was a test. A test of her loyalty, her strength, and her resolve to play this role to the death.
Emma felt a terrifying calm descend over her. She thought of Noah sleeping safely in the mansion. She thought of Daniel stealing her savings, beating her down emotionally, forging her name, and abandoning their child without a single second thought. He was a parasite who had dragged her toward rock bottom, and now he was threatening the safety net she had built for her son.
She took three slow, deliberate steps forward, the silk of her emerald dress rustling against the marble floor. Her high heels clicked with terrifying rhythm.
She stopped two feet from Daniel, looking down at him with cold, detached disgust.
“You left Noah and me to die in the cold, Daniel,” Emma said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. “You forged my signature. You put a mark on my back. And now you come here, trying to sell secrets to enemies, using my son’s name as a shield?”
“Emma, please! I’m his father!” Daniel wept, pulling at his restraints.
“You were a blood donor,” Emma corrected icily. “Vincent Calder is his father. Vincent protects him. Vincent feeds him. You are just a mistake I made six years ago.”
She turned back to Vincent, her eyes blazing with absolute conviction.
“He is a thief and a traitor to your house, Vincent,” Emma said softly, loud enough for the entire room to hear. “Do whatever your law requires. He means nothing to me.”
A shudder ran through the crowd. Salvatore Rossetti’s smile completely vanished. The sheer ice in Emma’s voice had silenced every skeptic in the room.
Vincent’s eyes burned with a dark, furious pride. He nodded to Marco.
“Remove him,” Vincent ordered calmly. “Take him to the basement in Ashland. We will discuss his debts tomorrow.”
As Daniel was dragged out screaming and kicking, the tension in the room snapped back to a fragile equilibrium. Vincent extended his hand to Emma. She placed her trembling hand in his. He lifted it to his lips, kissing her knuckles softly, his dark eyes never leaving hers.
“Flawlessly played, my Queen,” he whispered against her skin.
For the rest of the evening, no one questioned Emma Hayes. She was no longer viewed as a charity case or a fragile puppet. She was Vincent Calder’s terrifyingly loyal wife.
When they finally returned to the mansion long past midnight, the high of the performance faded, leaving Emma exhausted and trembling. She stood in the grand hallway, trying to unfasten the platinum diamond choker around her neck, but her hands were shaking too violently.
“Let me,” a deep voice spoke from behind her.
Vincent stepped up behind her. His warm, heavy fingers brushed against the bare skin of her nape as he worked the clasp. Emma caught her breath, feeling the heat of his massive body radiating against her back.
“You surprised me tonight,” Vincent murmured, the heavy diamond necklace coming loose in his hands. He didn't pull away immediately. His fingers lingered near her collarbone. “Most women in your position would have cried. They would have begged for his life out of misplaced morality.”
“He threatened Noah’s future,” Emma said quietly, turning around to face him. They were standing inches apart. “I would burn down the entire city to keep my son safe.”
Vincent stared into her eyes, his expression softer than she had ever seen it. “I know the feeling,” he whispered. “I would burn it down for both of you.”
Emma’s breath hitched. For a fraction of a second, Vincent’s eyes dropped to her lips. The air between them suddenly charged with a real, electric heat that had nothing to do with contracts or fake public appearances.
Before either of them could bridge the tiny gap between them, a small voice echoed from the top of the stairs.
“Mommy? Vincent?”
Noah stood at the landing, wearing his dinosaur pajamas, rubbing his sleepy eyes while clutching his velvet teddy bear.

The spell was broken. Vincent immediately stepped back, his stoic armor snapping back into place, though his eyes lingered on Emma for a beat longer.
“Go to your son, Emma,” Vincent said softly. “Tomorrow, the real war begins.”
