Chapter 9 - The Sunless Well

The interior of the temple was a vast, circular chamber dominated by a deep pit in the center. The pit had no bottom; it was a vertical abyss that seemed to pull the light from the air, a vacuum of absolute darkness that had existed since the dawn of the world.

Seraphine stood at the edge of the abyss, her body completely enveloped in an aura of pale-green fire. The wooden helmet was cracking open, slivers of white-hot stardust shooting through the seams of the Iron-Wood.

"Seraphine!" Elias shouted, running into the chamber, his boots sliding on the ancient basalt floor. He had left the battle behind, his father's men holding the line against Odran's remaining forces outside.

"Stay back, Elias!" her voice echoed, no longer double, but triple-toned now—a choir of celestial voices that sounded beautiful and terrifying all at once. "The well is drawing the fire... but it’s too strong! It’s pulling my soul down with it! If I don't let go... the world will break!"

King Odran burst into the chamber behind Elias, his armor dented and bloody. He looked at his daughter, and for the first time, the cold, ruthless king looked like a broken father. "Seraphine... no. I built the box to save you. I didn't know... I didn't know how to fix it."

"You couldn't fix it... because you didn't love her enough to risk your crown, Odran," Elias hissed, stepping toward the edge of the pit despite the blistering heat that was charring his navy coat.

He remembered Master Gideon’s final words: The ritual requires a catalyst. It must be channeled through something that shares her bloodline, or through an item of absolute devotion.

Elias looked at his left hand, where his heavy gold wedding ring rested. It was a simple band, forged from the iron of Ardenfall and the gold of Bellavere, the symbol of the vow he had spoken in the cathedral when he didn't even know her name.

"I am your husband, Seraphine," Elias said, his voice dropping to a calm, steady frequency that seemed to cut through the celestial noise. "You are not alone in the dark anymore."

He lunged forward, grabbing her by the waist just as the wooden helmet completely exploded into a thousand burning fragments.

The light that emerged was blinding, a flash of pure cosmic fire that filled the temple chamber until the stone walls turned translucent. Elias felt his skin burning, his hair singeing, but he didn't let go. He pressed his face against her neck, channeling every ounce of his will, his life, and his love through the gold band on his finger, using his own body as the lightning rod to guide the fire down into the abyss.

King Odran screamed, lunging forward to grab his daughter's hand from the other side, his silver crown falling into the pit as he finally chose his child over his kingdom. The three of them stood linked at the edge of eternity, a human chain holding back the sky.

With a final, deafening roar, the green star-fire rushed out of Seraphine's body, pouring through Elias and Odran down into the sunless well. The abyss swallowed the light, a great black belch of wind rushing up from the depths before the temple fell into absolute, perfect darkness.
