Chapter 8 - The Shadow Valley

The Valley of the Sunless Well was a desolate crater surrounded by black stone spires that looked like jagged teeth against the sky. No trees grew here; the ground was a crust of white salt and gray sulfur, smoking with toxic vents that turned the falling snow into greasy, yellow rain.
Elias and Seraphine stood at the rim of the valley, their horses exhausted and shivering beneath them. In the center of the crater rose the ruins of the ancient temple—a massive dome of black basalt, its columns carved with images of stars being swallowed by serpents.
Surrounding the temple was King Odran’s vanguard. Three hundred heavy infantrymen in crimson capes stood in perfect phalanx formations, their spears bristling like iron needles under the dim winter sky. At the front of the line stood the King himself, mounted on a massive white destrier, his silver crown gleaming like frost.
"He knew we would come here," Elias muttered, drawing his longsword. He had no army left, no guards, no scholars. It was just a prince, a princess, and a broken map.
"Elias," Seraphine said, her double voice returning as she looked down at the crimson lines. "You must leave me here. If you ride down there alone, they will cut you to pieces before you can draw your breath."
"Then it’s a good thing I didn't ride alone," Elias said, pointing toward the western ridge of the valley.
Through the mountain fog, a deep, resonant horn blasted—the war horn of Ardenfall.
King Alistair had marched. Down the slopes of the ridge, five hundred heavy horsemen in navy and gold armor descended like a tidal wave, their banners snapping in the wind. Elias’s father had not stayed behind in his palace; he had tracked his son's path, bringing the full might of the kingdom to protect his boy.
"Charge!" Elias roared, slamming his boots into his horse’s flanks as he led the descent into the crater, his sword raised high.
The valley erupted into a chaotic symphony of violence. The navy horsemen crashed into the crimson shields of Bellavere, the impact echoing through the spires like thunder. The salt crust beneath their feet turned red within minutes as the two kingdoms fought for the survival of their futures.
Elias cut through the outer line of infantry, his eyes fixed entirely on King Odran. The older king saw him coming, drawing his own broadsword and spurring his white horse forward through the melee.
"You fool!" Odran roared as their blades met with a shower of orange sparks. "You are destroying the only chance our kingdoms have to survive! If she releases that power inside the temple, the well will fail, and the star will consume us all!"
"You lied to us, Odran!" Elias shouted back, parrying a brutal downward stroke that nearly dismounted him. "You didn't send her to be a bride! You sent her to be a plague! We are going to drain the star-fire, and we are going to end your tyranny!"
As the two kings clashed, a terrifying screech ripped through the air.

Everyone stopped fighting. Soldiers from both sides fell to their knees, clutching their ears as the central dome of the black temple began to glow with a brilliant, blinding pale-green light.
Princess Seraphine had ridden past the battle line, straight to the entrance of the Sunless Well. The iron bands on her helmet were beginning to melt, the liquid metal dripping down her lace dress like tears of gold.
