Chapter 9 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than two hours—a shockingly brief time for a trial involving multiple counts of attempted premeditated murder, child endangerment, and conspiracy.
When the bailiff announced that a verdict had been reached, the entire courtroom held its collective breath. The room was packed to maximum capacity; news reporters were practically hanging over the gallery railings.
Tyler looked terrified, his breath coming in shallow, frantic gasps. Eleanor sat motionless, staring blankly at the wooden wall ahead, her arrogant spirit completely extinguished.
Judge Vance took her seat on the bench. "Will the defendants please stand and face the jury?"
Tyler and Eleanor stood up, flanked by their public defenders. Tyler’s knees visibly buckled, forcing his attorney to support his elbow.
"Madam Foreperson," Judge Vance asked, "has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?"
"We have, Your Honor," a middle-aged woman in the front row answered, standing up and handing a paper to the bailiff.
The bailiff passed the paper to the judge, who read it silently, nodding once, before handing it back.
"On the first count of Attempted Premeditated Murder in the First Degree against Rachel Vance," the foreperson read, her voice ringing with absolute finality, "we find the defendant, Tyler Vance... GUILTY."
A sharp collective gasp echoed through the courtroom!
"On the second count of Attempted Premeditated Murder in the First Degree against Lily Vance, we find the defendant, Tyler Vance... GUILTY."
"On the third count of Aggravated Child Abuse, we find the defendant, Tyler Vance... GUILTY."
Tyler fell into his chair with a choked sob, burying his face in his trembling hands.
"On the count of Attempted Premeditated Murder in the First Degree against Rachel Vance," the foreperson continued, "we find the defendant, Eleanor Vance... GUILTY."
"On the count of Attempted Premeditated Murder in the First Degree against Lily Vance, we find the defendant, Eleanor Vance... GUILTY."
"On the count of Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder, we find the defendant, Eleanor Vance... GUILTY."
Eleanor did not cry. She simply closed her eyes, letting out a long, hollow sigh as her legal world finally ended.
Judge Vance looked over her glasses at the convicted felons.
"In my thirty years on the bench," Judge Vance said, her voice dripping with profound disdain, "I have rarely witnessed such cold, unrepentant cruelty. You targeted a vulnerable young mother and a helpless, three-week-old infant for nothing more than financial greed. You stripped away every shred of humanity when you locked that car door."
The judge cleared her throat, adjusting her papers.
"Tyler Vance, Eleanor Vance—by the authority vested in me by this state, I sentence you both to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served consecutively with your upcoming federal sentences. You will spend the remainder of your natural lives inside a maximum-security facility."
The gavel struck the wooden block with a loud, thunderous CRACK!

Police officers immediately moved in, forcing Tyler and Eleanor to their feet, snapping heavy iron chains around their waists and ankles. As Tyler was led away in leg irons, he turned back one last time, looking at Rachel.
Rachel did not flinch. She did not look away. She stared at him with complete indifference, as if looking at a ghost that no longer had any power to haunt her world.
