Chapter 4 - The Deposition

Two weeks later, the civil court ordered an emergency preliminary hearing to address the restraining orders and temporary custody arrangements. The court room was grand, lined with dark mahogany and filled with intense tension.
On one side sat Rachel, Evelyn, and myself. Rachel looked striking—she had lost the pale, broken appearance from the hospital. She wore a sharp charcoal suit, her posture posture straight and unyielding.
On the opposite side sat Tyler, Eleanor, Marcus Vance, and a team of four junior attorneys. Eleanor looked pristine in a pearl-white suit, her hair styled immaculately, though her eyes were cold, darting nervously around the room. Tyler sat beside her, looking surprisingly gaunt, his arrogance slightly eroded by two weeks in a holding cell before making bail.
Judge Patricia Vance (no relation to the defendants) slammed her gavel down.
"We are here today regarding the emergency petitions filed by Ms. Rachel Vance," the judge announced. "Counsel, let us skip the grandstanding. I have reviewed the video evidence submitted by the prosecution in the concurrent criminal matter. It is... deeply disturbing."
Marcus Vance immediately stood up. "Your Honor, if I may. The video is incomplete and lacks proper chain of custody. Furthermore, my client, Eleanor Vance, was acting under the reasonable belief that her daughter-in-law was experiencing a severe mental health crisis that posed an immediate danger to the infant."
"Is that why she took the mother's phone and locked the vehicle in ninety-five-degree heat, Mr. Vance?" Judge Vance asked, her brow furrowing with disgust. "Is that standard medical procedure in your family?"
"Your Honor!" Evelyn Reed rose smoothly to her feet. "If the court permits, we would like to present supplementary evidence that establishes a clear, financial motive for this deliberate act of violence."
Marcus frowned. "Objection! Financial matters are irrelevant to a custody and protection hearing!"
"Overruled," Judge Vance stated sharply. "I will hear it."
Evelyn walked over to the bailiff, handing over a thick binder of documents. "Your Honor, we have submitted certified bank records, federal tax filings, and insurance policies obtained via subpoena. Six months ago, Mr. Tyler Vance took out a five-million-dollar key-person life insurance policy on his wife, Rachel, listing himself as the sole beneficiary."
Tyler’s jaw dropped. He snapped his head toward his uncle, whispering frantically.
"Furthermore," Evelyn continued, her voice echoing powerfully through the room, "we have provided documents showing that Vance Global Enterprises is currently under active investigation by the SEC for embezzlement exceeding twelve million dollars—an operation orchestrated by Eleanor and Marcus Vance. The insurance payout, combined with Rachel’s personal trust fund, was explicitly intended to cover this deficit before the firm's upcoming audit."
Eleanor’s pristine composure instantly shattered. She slammed her hand down on the wooden table. "That is slander! My husband built that company! How dare you pull accounting trash into this room!"
"Silence in my court!" Judge Vance banged her gavel hard. "Mrs. Vance, sit down immediately or I will have you held in contempt!"
"There's more, Your Honor," Evelyn added calmly. "We have submitted a sworn affidavit and audio recording from Mrs. Maria Alvarez, proving that representative agents of Eleanor Vance attempted to bribe a key eyewitness with fifty thousand dollars to alter her testimony."
Judge Vance looked over the documents, her face hardening into an expression of absolute sternness. She looked down from the bench at Tyler and Eleanor as if they were insects.
"I have seen enough," Judge Vance declared flatly. "Effective immediately, a full, permanent order of protection is granted to Rachel Vance and her daughter, Lily. Tyler Vance is to have zero contact, directly or through third parties, with his child or wife. Full physical and legal custody is awarded exclusively to Rachel."
Tyler leaped out of his seat. "She's my daughter! You can't take her from me!"
"Sit down, sir!" the judge ordered. "Furthermore, this court orders an immediate freeze on all joint assets, bank accounts, and properties shared by Tyler and Rachel Vance, pending full financial discovery. This court is also forwarding these financial disclosures directly to the District Attorney's office to be integrated into the criminal attempted murder trial."
As the judge struck the gavel to close the session, two federal agents in dark suits stepped into the back of the courtroom. They walked directly down the aisle toward the defense table.
"Eleanor Vance? Marcus Vance?" the lead agent asked smoothly. "You are under arrest for federal securities fraud, wire fraud, and grand larceny. Please step away from the table."
Eleanor screamed as the steel handcuffs were snapped around her manicured wrists. Marcus sat frozen, realizing that his legal license—and his freedom—were effectively gone.
Tyler fell back into his chair, completely isolated, abandoned by his family's wealth in a single hour.

Rachel leaned over to me, taking my hand tightly. "Thank you, Mom," she whispered.
"Don't thank me, baby," I replied, staring down at the ruined family across the aisle. "We're just getting started."
