Chapter 7 - The Arrest

Before the crowd on the courthouse steps could even begin to disperse, two black unmarked police sedans pulled up to the curb with their red and blue strobe lights flashing silently.

Detective Miller and three uniformed officers stepped out of the cars, walking directly up the granite steps toward Nathan.

Nathan’s face turned gray. He backed away a step, his heels catching on the stone edge. "What... what is this?"

Detective Miller pulled a folded white document from his coat pocket.

"Nathan Reed," Detective Miller announced loudly, his voice carrying across the silent crowd. "I have a warrant for your arrest issued by the State of North Carolina and the State of Connecticut, charging you with twelve felony counts of Grand Larceny, Wire Fraud, Identity Theft, and Corporate Tax Fraud."

Arthur gasped, grabbing his chest. "No! My son! You can't do this!"

"Step back, sir!" one of the uniformed officers warned Arthur firmly.

Detective Miller stepped behind Nathan, grabbing his wrists and pulling them behind his back. The sharp, metallic click of handcuffs echoed across the stone steps.

"You have the right to remain silent," Detective Miller read the Miranda warnings as he led a trembling, weeping Nathan down the steps toward the waiting police car. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

As Nathan was pushed into the back seat of the police cruiser, his eyes locked onto mine through the open door.

He didn't scream this time. He didn't yell accusations. He simply looked at me with a pathetic, desperate pleading—a man who had finally realized that his choices had reached their ultimate, inescapable end.

I stood at the top of the steps, holding my coat tightly around my shoulders, watching the police car drive away into the city traffic until its tail lights vanished.

Sarah walked up beside me, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder. "It’s over, Clara. The criminal case is out of your hands now. The grand jury will indict him by Friday."

I took a deep, clean breath of the crisp winter air, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over my soul.

"No, Sarah," I smiled, turning toward my town car. "The past is over. Our future starts now."
