Chapter 10 - The Foundation of Steel

A year after the surgery that changed my life forever, I held a small housewarming dinner at my condo.
The dining room table was set with fresh linens, glowing candles, and a beautiful centerpiece of white roses. Sitting around the table were the people who had truly acted as my family during the darkest storm of my life: David Vance, my fierce attorney; Sarah, my loyal coworker; Nurse Renata, who had become a dear friend after the hospital ordeal; and three close friends from my professional network.
The room was filled with laughter, the clinking of wine glasses, and the warm, rich smell of roasted garlic and rosemary lamb.
As the evening drew to a close, David stood up from his chair, raising his glass of wine.
"I'd like to make a toast," David announced, smiling warmly around the table.
Everyone grew quiet, turning their eyes toward him.
"To Molly Brian," David said, looking directly at me. "A woman who faced the ultimate betrayal while lying helpless on an operating table, but who rose up with the strength of steel, reclaimed her home, protected her dignity, and proved that a true foundation is not built on bloodlines—it is built on integrity, courage, and truth."
"To Molly!" everyone cheered in unison, raising their glasses high.
I stood up, holding my glass, looking at the warm, smiling faces surrounding my table.
Through the large bay windows behind me, the city lights sparkled like a sea of grounded stars. The pale green walls of my condo stood solid, warm, and secure. The titanium screws in my back were completely healed, holding my spine straight, tall, and unyielding.

I looked down at the table, then up at my true family.
"Thank you," I said softly, my voice filled with a deep, unbreakable peace. "Welcome to my home."
