Chapter 7 - HEALING LEAH’S HEART

While the legal storm raged outside, inside our home, a quiet, beautiful healing was taking place.

With the restraining orders in place and the toxic noise of my family erased, Leah began to change.

We started weekly child therapy sessions with Dr. Clara Evans, a warm, soft-spoken play therapist who specialized in adoption trauma.

During our fourth session, Dr. Evans invited Michael and me into the playroom.

Leah sat on a soft green rug surrounded by wooden dollhouses and plastic figures.

"Leah wants to show you something she built today," Dr. Evans said with a gentle smile.

I knelt on the floor beside my daughter.

Leah had set up two dollhouses. One was small, dark, and empty. The other was large, bright, and filled with miniature furniture, wooden dogs, and bright yellow lights.

"This was the shelter where I used to live," Leah pointed to the dark house, her voice calm and clear. "It was okay, but it wasn't a home."

Then she pointed to the bright, warm dollhouse.

"This is our house," she said, looking up into my eyes. She grabbed four wooden figures—a daddy doll, a mommy doll with a round tummy, a little girl doll holding a tiny rabbit, and a tiny baby doll in a crib.

"Look, Mommy," Leah whispered, holding up the little girl doll. "She has a big room right next to the baby. She isn't taking space. She’s helping make the space bigger."

Tears welled up in my eyes, warm and cleansing. I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tiny frame against mine.

"You make our whole world bigger, Leah," I sobbed softly into her hair. "You are the best big sister in the entire world."

"And no one can ever send me away?" she asked, her voice seeking that final, solid anchor.

"No one," Michael said, kneeling down and wrapping his big arms around both of us. "You are a Bennett-Miller. You are our daughter forever and ever."

For the first time in a month, Leah let out a bright, ringing laugh—a sound so pure and sweet it melted every drop of pain remaining in my heart.
