Chapter 6 - THE FINANCIAL SEPARATION

The collapse of Rachel’s career sent shockwaves through my father’s household.

For years, my father had been using a family trust—established by my late grandfather—to subsidize Rachel’s lavish lifestyle, cover Chloe’s private tuition, and pay off my mother’s endless credit card debts.

My grandfather, a wise and self-made businessman who had adored me, had named me co-trustee of the estate alongside my father when I turned twenty-five.

I had never paid much attention to the trust, allowing my father to manage the disbursements because I trusted him.

I was done being naive.

On a rainy Wednesday morning, Michael and I sat in the high-rise conference room of Sterling & Associates, accompanied by a forensic accountant named David Vance.

"Sarah," David said, spreading a mountain of financial ledgers across the mahogany table. "We’ve completed the initial audit of the Bennett Family Trust. And what we found is deeply troubling."

"What did he do?" I asked.

"Over the past five years," David explained, "your father has embezzled over $450,000 from your designated share of the trust. He diverted those funds into a private LLC registered under Rachel’s name to pay for her mortgage, luxury cars, and Chloe’s tuition."

Michael gasped. "That’s illegal!"

"It's breach of fiduciary duty and grand larceny," Victoria Sterling chimed in from the head of the table. "Arthur assumed you would never ask for an accounting. He treated your grandfather's legacy as his personal slush fund to favor Rachel."

"What are our options?" I asked, my heart aching slightly at the sheer depth of my father's betrayal, but my resolve remaining unshakeable.

"We issue an immediate legal freeze on all trust accounts," Victoria stated. "We demand full repayment of your $450,000 with interest within thirty days, or we file criminal charges against Arthur Bennett with the State Attorney General."

"If we freeze the trust," I realized aloud, "my father won't be able to pay his law firm's partnership dues, and Rachel won't be able to keep her house."

"They made their bed, Sarah," Michael said gently, taking my hand. "They tried to rob Leah of her home. They don't get to live in luxury using money stolen from you."

"Do it," I told Victoria. "Freeze everything."

Two days later, the legal freeze went into effect.

My father’s credit cards were declined at his country club. Rachel’s luxury SUV was repossessed by the bank after the lease payments failed to clear. My parents’ quiet, elegant life built on stolen money and social deceit began to crumble into dust.
