Chapter 7 - THE TRIBUNAL OF TRUTH

The regional courthouse was packed to maximum capacity. The story of a high-profile corporate director suing his own mother for extortion, forgery, and domestic abuse had leaked to the press, creating a massive public scandal across the state.

Doña Teresa sat at the defense table, wearing an expensive black dress and dark sunglasses, flanked by two top-tier defense attorneys funded by Valerie’s father. Valerie and her father sat in the front row of the gallery, looking tense and pale.

I sat at the prosecution table beside Gabriel Vance, wearing a tailored navy suit. Elena sat behind us, looking beautiful and serene in a soft cream-colored coat and a matching silk scarf covering her head. Her skin was glowing with returning health, her strength steadily recovering thanks to the successful chemotherapy cycles.

The judge, a stern woman with sharp silver hair named Judge Morales, pounded her wooden gavel.

"Court is in session," Judge Morales announced. "We are here to evaluate the criminal charges against the defendant, Doña Teresa Santana, regarding charges of felony extortion, forgery, and elder financial abuse."

My mother’s lead attorney stood up, offering a confident, smug smile to the court. "Your Honor, these charges are nothing more than a tragic family feud fueled by an ungrateful son and his ambitious wife. We have submitted a legal promissory note proving that all financial transactions between the defendant and the victim were legitimate repayments of a debt."

Gabriel Vance stood up smoothly, holding the USB flash drive in his hand.

"Your Honor," Gabriel’s voice rang out clear as a bell. "We request permission to submit new, verified digital evidence obtained under sworn affidavit from a key witness—Aunt Sofia Santana."

My mother’s head snapped toward the gallery, her eyes wide with absolute horror as she saw Sofia sitting three rows back, looking down at her hands.

"Objection!" her attorney shouted, slamming his hand on the table. "This evidence was not submitted during discovery!"

"Overruled," Judge Morales barked. "I will hear the audio recording."

The courtroom went dead silent as the clerk inserted the flash drive into the court’s audio system.

The speakers hissed for a second, and then my mother’s unmistakable, sharp voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room:

"...Make sure the signature looks old, Gomez! If the judge sees this promissory note, they’ll think the farm girl owed me the money all along! Valerie’s father promised he’d cover your fee once the offshore accounts are cleared..."

Gasps erupted throughout the courtroom!

Reporters began typing frantically on their laptops. Valerie’s father jumped up from his seat, his face turning bright red, and stormed out of the gallery, abandoned by his own panic. Valerie scrambled after him, her face pale as a sheet.

My mother stood up from her chair, screaming frantically at the speakers: "That’s a lie! That recording is fake! Sofia, you traitorous snake!"

"Order in the court!" Judge Morales slammed her gavel repeatedly, her face dark with fury. "Silence! Defendant, sit down immediately or I will hold you in contempt!"

My mother sank back into her chair, her hands shaking violently, her defense attorneys whispering frantically to each other, realizing their case was completely destroyed.

Judge Morales adjusted her glasses, looking down at my mother with icy contempt. "The evidence of forgery, extortion, and conspiracy to defraud is overwhelming. I am remanding the defendant, Doña Teresa Santana, into immediate police custody without bail pending final sentencing."

Two bailiffs stepped forward, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from their belts.

My mother looked across the room at me, her eyes filled with frantic, pathetic desperation. "Mateo! Mateo, please! Tell them to stop! I am your mother! You can't let them lock me away!"

I stood up, holding Elena’s hand tightly in mine. I looked at the woman who had given me life, and felt nothing but a deep, quiet pity.

"You locked yourself away years ago, Teresa," I said softly. "When you chose greed over love."

The bailiffs snapped the steel cuffs onto her wrists and led her out through the side door, her wails echoing down the marble hallway until the door clicked shut, ending her reign of terror forever.
