Chapter 6 - THE CONFESSION IN THE SHADOWS

The coffee shop behind the old cathedral was dark, small, and smelled of roasted espresso beans and damp stone. Rain had begun to fall over the city, slicking the cobblestone streets outside.
I sat in a dark corner booth, wearing a dark raincoat, watching the front entrance.
At precisely five o'clock, the bell above the door chimed, and Aunt Sofia stepped inside, clutching a wet umbrella. She looked nervous, her eyes scanning the dim room frantically until she spotted me.
She hurried over, sitting down across from me, her hands trembling as she set her handbag on the table.
"Mateo," she whispered, looking around as if she expected my mother to pop out of the shadows. "Thank God you came."
"Why did you text me, Aunt Sofia?" I asked, keeping my voice cold and guarded. "Last time I saw you, you were calling me possessed for protecting my wife."
Sofia looked down at her hands, tears welling in her eyes. "I was scared, Mateo. Your mother... Teresa has lost her mind. She’s completely unhinged."
"Tell me about the promissory note," I demanded flatly.
Sofia took a deep breath, wiping her eyes with a tissue. "Two days ago, after she received the court summons, Teresa went to see Valerie’s father. They brought in a local shady notary—a man named Gomez who owes Valerie’s father a lot of money. I saw them, Mateo. I saw Teresa sign your father-in-law's name onto an old piece of parchment paper they aged using tea leaves and an iron."
I leaned forward, my heart beating fast. "Do you have proof of this?"
Sofia reached into her handbag and pulled out a small, encrypted USB flash drive, sliding it across the table toward me.
"I recorded their conversation on my phone," Sofia whispered, her voice shaking. "Teresa told Valerie’s father that if she goes down for extortion, she’ll drag him down too because he helped her hide the money in his company's offshore accounts. She’s been using his business to launder the cash she took from Elena!"
I picked up the flash drive, feeling its weight in my hand. "Why are you giving this to me, Sofia? You’ve supported her cruelty for years."
Sofia covered her face, weeping softly. "Because yesterday... yesterday I went to see Elena at your coastal cottage. I didn't knock. I just watched her through the window. I saw her sitting in the garden, so pale, so thin, wearing a headscarf... she looked like an angel, Mateo. And I realized what a monster I’ve been. Teresa made us all hate her because Teresa was jealous of her. Teresa was jealous that Elena had something no amount of money could buy: a pure heart, and a husband who truly loved her."
I looked at my aunt, seeing the genuine remorse and terror in her eyes. The house of cards my mother had built on fear and manipulation was finally collapsing under the weight of her own sins.
"This recording will clear Elena," I said softly, pocketing the flash drive. "And it will put my mother behind bars."
"I know," Sofia sobbed, nodding her head. "And she deserves it. Please, Mateo... tell Elena I am so, so sorry."

"Tell her yourself when this is over," I stood up, pulling my coat around me. "Thank you for doing the right thing, Aunt Sofia. It’s the first honorable thing anyone in our family has done in a very long time."
I walked out into the pouring rain, holding the USB drive tightly in my pocket. The final nail in Doña Teresa’s legal coffin was secured. It was time to end this trial once and for all.
