Chapter 9 - Healing and Light

Spring arrived in Southern California, bringing bright sunshine and blooming flowers.
With Agatha in prison and her estate liquidated by court order, all of David's stolen assets and life insurance were rightfully restored to my daughters and me. Additionally, Bruce helped establish the Gabrielle Shields Foundation, a legitimate, heavily audited charity dedicated to providing shelter, legal aid, and financial aid to abused mothers and children.
The tiny room beside the laundry area was now just a distant bad dream.
My daughters were thriving. Olivia was taking piano lessons, Erica had joined a soccer team, and little Holly spent her afternoons painting in the bright sunroom of Bruce’s San Diego estate, which had truly become our home.
One afternoon, I was sitting on the veranda watching the girls chase Bruce’s golden retriever across the sprawling green lawn. Bruce walked out, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade, and sat next to me.
"You look peaceful, Gabrielle," he said softly, handing me a glass.
"I am," I smiled, looking at my daughters' laughing faces. "For six years, I thought peace was something I would never feel again. You gave us our lives back, Bruce."
"You gave yourself your life back," Bruce corrected gently, looking at me with deep tenderness. "You had the courage to speak up when everyone else was silent. I just provided the microphone."

He reached out, taking my hand in his. The warmth of his skin sent a familiar sweet flutter through my chest. Over the past few months, our connection had grown far beyond gratitude and protection. We had shared late-night conversations, quiet mornings, and the shared joy of raising my girls. Bruce, who had once sworn off family, had become a devoted, loving presence in all our lives.
"Gabrielle," Bruce said softly, his dark eyes searching mine. "There’s something I want to ask you."
