Chapter 5 - The Golden Child Crumbles

With the walls closing in, the dynamic within the Hayes household turned toxic. Erica, who had spent her entire life sheltered from the consequences of her actions, was completely unprepared for the reality of a criminal prosecution. She could no longer go to her favorite restaurants without receiving icy stares. Her social media accounts were flooded with thousands of messages condemning her cruelty.

One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Sarah received a phone call from an unfamiliar number. Against her better judgment, she answered.

"Sarah? Please, you have to stop this," a voice sobbed into the receiver. It was Erica. The smug, arrogant girl from the text message was gone, replaced by a panicked, hyperventilating mess.

"Erica," Sarah said coldly, her voice devoid of any warmth. "You shouldn't be calling me. Speak to my legal counsel."

"Sarah, please! Mom and Dad are fighting every day! Dad says we’re going to lose the house! The police came to the door with another subpoena this morning!" Erica cried, her voice echoing with a pathetic, childlike desperation. "It was an accident, Sarah! You know I didn't mean to burn you! I just tripped! And the kick... I was startled! I didn't know you were pregnant, I swear!"

"You stood over me and told me you could make it quiet, Erica," Sarah said, each word dripping like acid. "You knew exactly what you were doing. You’ve always hated me because I had a life you couldn't replicate. You thought you could destroy my happiness and Mom and Dad would just clean up the mess like they always do."

"They're going to put me in prison, Sarah!" Erica shrieked, her voice turning into a ragged howl. "I can't go to jail! I won't survive there! Please, tell the DA to drop the charges! We're sisters!"

"We were never sisters, Erica. You were a predator, and I was your prey," Sarah said smoothly. "But the dynamic has changed. Goodbye, Erica."

Sarah hung up the phone and immediately dialed Michael. "She’s breaking. She just called me, confessing and begging."

"Good," Michael said. "Because the grand jury just returned an indictment. Erica is being charged with felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon—the scalding tea—and attempted feticide. Linda and Arthur are being charged with obstruction of justice, perjury, and accessory after the fact. The police are on their way to their house right now with arrest warrants."

Sarah stood by the window of her penthouse, looking out over the rain-slicked streets. She felt no joy in her family’s destruction, only a deep, profound sense of justice. They had chosen their path the moment they chose to let her bleed on the rug to protect a monster.

An hour later, the local news broadcast a live feed from the Hayes suburban neighborhood. Sarah watched as her parents and sister were led out of their beautiful home in handcuffs. Linda looked old and broken, her head bowed to avoid the cameras. Arthur looked defeated.

But it was Erica who caught Sarah’s attention. She was screaming, flailing against the officers, her heavy combat boots scraping against the asphalt as she was shoved into the back of a police cruiser. The golden child was finally being forced to face the dark, cold reality of the world she had created.
