Chapter 2 - The Battle Lines Are Drawn

The next forty-eight hours were a masterclass in legal warfare. Michael did not leave Sarah’s side, transforming her private ICU room into a makeshift command center. By midnight of the first evening, he had secured an emergency hearing with a federal judge he knew from his days clerkship, completely bypassing the local precinct's attempts to hold Sarah under guard. The handcuffs were removed, but the war had only just begun.
The Hayes family had played their card, believing that a swift, overwhelming lie would crush Sarah before she could fight back. What they failed to realize was that Sarah wasn't just a victim anymore; she was an elite corporate attorney with resources they couldn't begin to comprehend.
"We need the physical evidence before they can destroy it," Sarah said, sitting up in bed. The burns on her lap were heavily bandaged, and a dull ache throbbed in her abdomen, but her mind was razor-sharp. "The clothes I was wearing. The peppermint tea stains on the rug. The drywall where my father blocked the door."
Michael nodded, tapping his tablet. "I’ve already filed an emergency ex parte motion for the preservation of evidence. A private forensics team is currently outside your parents' house with a court order. If Linda or Arthur so much as run a vacuum cleaner over that rug, they’ll be cited for spoliation of evidence, which carries automatic adverse interference in court."
"What about Erica?" Sarah asked, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the hospital sheets. "The words she whispered to me right before she kicked me... 'I bet if I really tried, I could make it quiet.' Michael, it wasn't an accident. It was attempted feticide. She knew I was pregnant. She wanted to erase it."
"She’s going to prison, Sarah. I promise you," Michael said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "But right now, they have the local DA’s ear. Your mother used her connections with the local country club circuit. The assistant DA assigned to the case is a man named Bradley Evans. He’s ambitious, lazy, and loves a high-profile domestic violence case that paints the wealthy corporate lawyer as the aggressor."
Just then, Sarah’s phone—which Michael had recovered from their car, as her parents had only managed to hide Michael's phone during the chaos—buzzed. It was a text message from an unknown number.
Sarah opened it. It was a photograph of Erica, sitting in a plush armchair at their parents’ house, smiling smugly while holding a fresh mug of tea. The caption read: “Accidents happen, sister. But some people just don't know how to stay in their place. Enjoy the hospital bill.”
Sarah stared at the screen, her blood boiling. Erica was so coddled, so wrapped in the protective blanket of Linda’s toxic favoritism, that she genuinely believed she was untouchable. She believed that life was still a childhood game where she could break Sarah's toys and watch Sarah get grounded for it.
"She sent this to bait me," Sarah said, showing the screen to Michael. "She wants me to lash out. She wants me to call her, to threaten her, so they can use it to bolster their restraining order against us."
Michael smiled, a cold, predatory expression that would have terrified his corporate opponents. "Let her celebrate. Every text she sends, every smug social media post she makes, is a nail in her own coffin. We aren't replying, Sarah. We are going to let them think they are winning. We are going to let them walk right into the trap."

By the end of the week, Sarah was discharged from the hospital. The doctor gave strict orders for bed rest to protect the fragile pregnancy, but Sarah refused to remain idle. They retreated to their high-security penthouse downtown, turning the dining room into a war room.
They hired the best private investigators in the state. They didn't just look into the events of that horrific afternoon; they began to dig into the dark, hidden underbelly of the Hayes family finances. If Linda and Arthur were willing to commit felony perjury to protect their golden child, Sarah was going to tear down the entire kingdom they had built to shelter her.
