Chapter 3 - The Interrogation Room

Within twenty minutes, the maternity suite had been cleared of everyone except medical staff, my father, his legal team, and two city detectives who had arrived in response to the emergency fraud and kidnapping call placed by Evelyn.

Adrian and Vanessa were no longer in the room. They had been escorted down to the security basement in separate handcuffs, their protests drowned out by the clicking of camera shutters from reporters who had somehow caught wind of the spectacle unfolding at St. Jude’s Hospital.

Celeste had fled the moment the officers cuffed her son, though Evelyn had already arranged for her assets to be frozen pending a forensic audit of Adrian’s company accounts.

I sat propped up against the hospital pillows, holding Lily, who was now sleeping soundly against my chest. My father stood by the window, watching the police cars load Adrian into the back of a cruiser.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you who I was sooner, Dad," I said quietly, breaking the heavy silence of the room.

My father turned away from the glass, walking back to my bedside. He pulled up a chair, sitting down and taking my hand in his calloused grip.

"You had your reasons, Claire," he said gently. "When you walked away from the family business three years ago to make your own way in the world, you told me you wanted to know what it felt like to be loved for who you are, not what's in our bank accounts. I respected that. I hated watching you struggle in that tiny apartment, and I despised Adrian from the moment I saw the way he looked at you—like you were an accessory rather than a wife—but I gave you your space."

"And look where it got me," I whispered bitterly, looking down at my sleeping daughter. "A forged contract and a stolen baby."

"It got you strength," my father corrected firmly, his hazel eyes locking onto mine with fierce pride. "And it reminded me of something important: sometimes, you have to let the wolves expose themselves before you burn their forest to the ground."

The door opened softly, and Detective Miller, a tired-looking man with graying hair and a worn leather notebook, stepped inside.

"Mr. Whitmore, Miss Whitmore," the detective nodded respectfully. "We've taken Mr. Vance and Miss Moore down to the precinct. Mr. Vance is currently trying to trade every secret he has about his business associates just to avoid maximum sentencing for forgery and attempted child abduction. But there's something else you need to see."

Detective Miller handed a sealed plastic evidence bag to my father. Inside was a flash drive and a sheaf of printed emails.

"What is this?" my father asked, examining the papers.

"We seized Vanessa Moore’s personal laptop from her car outside," Detective Miller explained. "It turns out this wasn't just an impulsive affair or a sudden scheme to steal a newborn. They planned this months ago. There are emails between Vanessa and Adrian discussing how to systematically isolate you, drain your personal savings—which Adrian had power of attorney over—and force you into signing away parental rights the moment the baby was born."

My stomach churned. I had suspected Vanessa for months, but seeing the cold, calculated typography of their betrayal laid bare in black and white made me physically sick.

"They were going to leave me with nothing," I whispered.

"They were going to," my father agreed, standing up slowly. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying resolve. "Instead, they are going to learn what happens when you pick a fight with a family that owns the courtroom, the bank, and the sheriff."
