Chapter 2 - The Collapse of a Bluff

Panic finally broke through the fragile veneer of Adrian’s composure. He looked at Vanessa, who was still clutching Lily as if the infant were a shield against an oncoming freight train.
"Vanessa, give her back," Adrian hissed, his voice cracking with rising hysteria.
"No!" Vanessa snapped back, her eyes wide with a mix of terror and greed. "We have rights! She signed the papers! You said her family was nothing—you said she was a nobody from an orphanage!"
"I never said she was from an orphanage," Adrian yelled, sweat beading on his forehead. "I said she didn't talk about her family! I didn't know—how was I supposed to know she was a Whitmore?!"
"Because you were too busy sleeping with your secretary to do basic background checks, Mr. Vance," one of the attorneys, a sharp-eyed woman named Evelyn Thorne, stated smoothly. She stepped forward, holding a tablet displaying a flurry of financial transactions. "Furthermore, Miss Vanessa Moore, your involvement in the fabrication of these documents constitutes conspiracy to commit kidnapping and document fraud. The local police department has already been notified. In fact, if you look out the window right now, you'll see why they're parked by your car."
Vanessa whipped her head around toward the hospital window overlooking the ambulance bay. Two squad cars were parked directly behind Adrian’s imported sports car, their blue and red lights flashing silently against the brick wall. Officer-friendly wasn't paying a courtesy visit; they were securing the perimeter.
Celeste, realizing that her son’s house of cards had completely imploded, tried a different tactic. She pasted on a trembling, theatrical smile and stepped toward my father, dabbing imaginary tears from her eyes with a designer handkerchief.
"Jonathan—may I call you Jonathan?" she simpered, her voice dripping with false intimacy. "Surely we can handle this like civilized people. It’s just a misunderstanding between young lovers! Adrian made a foolish mistake, yes, but we are all family now—"
"Silence, woman," my father commanded without even turning his head to look at her. The sheer contempt in his tone froze Celeste mid-sentence, her mouth hanging open like a breached dam. "If you speak another word in this room, I will ensure that every country club, charity board, and high-society circle in this state permanently bans your name from their registries before the sun sets."
Celeste stepped back as if she had been physically struck, her hands flying to her chest.
Vanessa, realizing she was completely cornered and that Adrian was entirely useless, made a desperate move toward the private bathroom door on the other side of the room. "I'm keeping the baby!" she shrieked, darting forward with Lily in her arms.
She didn't make it two steps.
Evelyn Thorne moved with startling speed, sticking out her foot just enough to catch Vanessa’s heel. Vanessa stumbled, tumbling hard against a leather armchair and dropping the bundle.
My heart stopped beating.
Before the cry could even leave Lily’s lungs, my father crossed the room in a blur of motion. His strong, steady hands scooped up the infant milliseconds before she could hit the floor. He cradled my daughter against his chest with a gentleness that contrasted sharply with the lethal ice in his eyes.
Walking back to the bed, my father lowered himself onto the edge of the mattress and gently placed Lily back into my trembling arms.

"She's right here, Claire," he murmured, his voice softening instantly as he looked at us both. "You're safe. Both of you."
I pulled my daughter close, burying my face in her soft blanket as hot tears finally broke free. Lily stirred, let out a tiny, hiccuping breath, and quieted down the second she felt my heartbeat against hers.
