Chapter 4 - The Shareholder Ambush

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel in Manhattan was filled with three hundred of Blackwood Incorporated’s primary shareholders, board members, and financial journalists.
Caleb Blackwood stood behind the podium, wearing a tailored Tom Ford suit that looked noticeably loose around his shoulders. He had lost ten pounds in four weeks. His eyes were sunken, dark shadows carved deep beneath his cheekbones.
beside him on the stage sat his mother, Eleanor, looking regal in navy silk, though her fingers twitched nervously around her pearl necklace.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Caleb began, his voice projecting through the crystal audio system, though it lacked its usual sharp resonance. "As we review our Q3 projections, I am pleased to report a twelve percent growth in our maritime logistics division..."
In the fourth row of the auditorium, Arthur, Caleb’s assistant, sat silently. He pulled a silver tablet from his leather bag, tapped the screen twice, and hit Execute.
Instantly, every tablet on the desks of the six board members sitting in the front row chimed with an incoming priority file notification.
Richard Pendelton, the grey-haired chairman of the audit committee, picked up his tablet. As he opened the file, his thick eyebrows pulled together into a hard, furious line.
Caleb continued his speech, unaware of the quiet explosion happening beneath him. "...and with our upcoming renewal of our flagship headquarters on Madison Avenue, we project a seamless transition into Q4—"
"Mr. Blackwood," Richard Pendelton interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like an axe. He stood up, holding his tablet toward the stage.
Caleb stopped mid-sentence, blinking. "Richard? Please hold your questions for the open floor session at the end of the presentation."
"This cannot wait for the open floor, Caleb," Richard said coldly, stepping into the aisle. "I have just received an emergency forensic audit from an independent legal team in Geneva."
Eleanor sat up straight in her chair, her face going pale.
"What audit?" Caleb asked, trying to maintain his executive composure.
"An audit detailing four point two million dollars in unauthorized corporate wire transfers to a shell company registered under the name of Miss Khloe Reed," Richard declared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings of the ballroom.
A collective gasp rippled through the three hundred guests. Cameras began flashing instantly as journalists scrambled to record the moment.
"That... that is an internal administrative detail!" Caleb stuttered, his composure shattering in real-time. "Khloe Reed was hired as an independent brand consultant for our Midwestern marketing campaign—"
"Miss Reed has no marketing credentials, Caleb!" Richard roared. "Furthermore, this audit is accompanied by a formal eviction notice from Vanguard Real Estate Holdings! Our leases for 450 Madison Avenue expire in seventy-two hours, and Vanguard has refused all terms for renewal due to corporate misconduct by executive leadership!"
The ballroom broke into complete chaos. Shareholders leapt to their feet, shouting questions, while photographers rushed the stage.
"Is it true, Mr. Blackwood?" a Bloomberg reporter shouted. "Are you facing immediate eviction?"
"Is the SEC investigating the wire transfers to Miss Reed?" another called out.
Eleanor grabbed Caleb’s arm, her voice frantic in his ear. "Caleb! Do something! Deny it!"
Caleb stood frozen behind the podium, the bright television lights blinding him. In his mind, he wasn't in the St. Regis ballroom anymore. He was standing on the wet pavement outside Manhattan Presbyterian, watching the emergency room doors slide shut as he walked away from the woman who had pulled the wheel to save his life.

He looked down at Arthur, sitting calmly in the fourth row.
Arthur met his gaze, offered a subtle, polite bow, stood up, and walked out of the ballroom, leaving the Blackwood empire to tear itself apart.
