Chapter 2 - The Echo Chamber

Back in New York, the sun was just rising over the Manhattan skyline, casting cold blue shadows across the floor of Caleb Blackwood’s penthouse in the West Village.

Caleb sat at the kitchen island, an untouched cup of black coffee in front of him. The apartment was deafeningly silent. For three years, the morning had been filled with the subtle, comforting sounds of my presence—the rustle of the morning papers, the quiet clinking of porcelain as I prepared his tea, the soft jazz playing from the terrace speakers.

Now, there was only the hum of the sub-zero refrigerator.

On the marble counter in front of him sat the prescription bottle Arthur had brought back from the hospital. Inside, the half-circle of broken platinum gleamed under the recessed spotlight.

The front door unlocked, and his mother, Eleanor Blackwood, glided into the foyer wearing a sleek mink coat and carrying a leather handbag.

"Caleb," Eleanor snapped, throwing her gloves onto the console table. "Why haven't you answered my calls? The board meeting for the new logistics merger is in two hours, and Arthur says you haven't been to the office since yesterday afternoon!"

"She left, Mother," Caleb said, his voice flat, staring at the severed ring.

Eleanor scoffed, stepping into the kitchen and pouring herself a glass of sparkling water. "Don't be dramatic. Lucia is throwing a tantrum because you didn't hold her hand in the emergency room. You know how sensitive these creative types are. She’s probably at her friend’s loft in Brooklyn or staying at a hotel."

"She’s not in Brooklyn," Caleb said, finally looking up. His eyes were shot through with red veins. "She had herself medevaced out of the country at nine o'clock last night."

Eleanor froze, her glass halfway to her lips. "Medevaced? On whose authority? With what money?"

"I don't know!" Caleb slammed his hand onto the counter, making the coffee cup jump. "The hospital won't talk to me! The head surgeon told me to my face that I abandoned her while she was bleeding out! He threatened to file a complaint with the medical board if I tried to access her transfer records!"

"That is absurd," Eleanor said, though her voice lost a fraction of its composure. "You are her legal husband. You had every right to prioritize Khloe. Khloe has a documented medical history with our family!"

"Khloe had a bump on her head, Mother!" Caleb shouted, standing up so fast his barstool rattled against the floor. "Lucia had a shattered leg and internal bleeding! I didn't even look at her chart! I told the trauma team she could wait!"

"You were under stress," Eleanor said smoothly, though her brow furrowed. "Khloe’s father is our primary shareholder in the Midwest division. Keeping Khloe calm was a strategic priority. Lucia should have understood that. She is your wife; her job is to support your position, not create a scene."

Before Caleb could respond, his private cell phone chimed. He grabbed it instantly, expecting my name to appear on the screen.

It was Khloe.

"Caleb..." Khloe’s soft, breathless voice came through the speaker. "I’m back at the penthouse. My head is throbbing so badly, and the doctor said I shouldn't be alone. Can you come over and help me with my prescription?"

Caleb looked at the severed ring sitting on the marble counter. For three years, that voice had been an absolute command. Whenever Khloe called, he dropped whatever he was doing—our anniversary dinners, my gallery openings, late-night strategy sessions—and ran to her side.

For the first time in his life, the sound of her voice made something twist uncomfortably in his gut.

"Khloe," Caleb said slowly. "Arthur is outside your door with a private nurse. She will handle your medication."

There was a sudden pause on the line. "What? Caleb, I don't want a nurse. I want you. You promised my father you would take care of me—"

"My wife was flown out of the country in an emergency transport jet last night, Khloe," Caleb said, his voice dropping into a register Khloe had never heard before. "I am dealing with a corporate and personal crisis."

"Well, you don't have to be so rude!" Khloe whined, her tone instantly shifting from frail to defensive. "It’s not my fault Lucia got hurt in the crash! She was driving!"

"Lucia wasn't driving," Caleb said icy. "The truck ran a red light on my side. She pulled the wheel to save me."

He hung up the phone before Khloe could answer.

Eleanor stared at her son, her expression hardening. "You are letting your emotions cloud your judgment, Caleb. Lucia will come back once her money runs low. She has no independent income. Her mother left her nothing but that old art restoration studio in Vermont. Give her a week of cold silence. She will realize how precarious her position is without the Blackwood name."

At that exact moment, the private elevator chimed.

Arthur, Caleb’s chief assistant, stepped out onto the marble floor. His face was ghostly pale, holding a thick white courier envelope bearing the red wax seal of a Swiss law firm.

"Mr. Blackwood," Arthur said, his voice trembling slightly. "A process server just delivered this to the front desk downstairs. Along with a courier notice for the corporate office."

Caleb snatched the envelope, tearing open the seal.

Inside was a formal petition for divorce filed in the New York Supreme Court, citing physical neglect, abandonment, and gross breach of matrimonial contract.

Attached to the petition was a secondary document on heavy parchment:

NOTICE OF TERMINATION OF COMMERCIAL LEASE To: Blackwood Incorporated From: Vanguard Real Estate Holdings / The Sinclair-Laurent Heritage Trust Subject: Immediate Vacancy Order for 450 Madison Avenue, New York, NY.

Caleb’s eyes scanned the pages, his breath catching in his throat. "What... what is Vanguard?"

Arthur swallowed hard. "I ran the corporate registry check ten minutes ago, sir. Vanguard Real Estate Holdings is a private trust owned entirely by Madame Lucia Sinclair."

Eleanor grabbed the papers from Caleb’s hand, her eyes scanning the bottom line where my bold, crisp signature sat beside Jean-Luc Vance's legal stamp.

"She owns our headquarters?" Eleanor whispered, the color completely draining from her face.

"Not just the headquarters," Arthur added in a hushed tone. "She has also initiated a legal freeze on all joint financial accounts pending a court audit of Blackwood Incorporated's asset transfers to Miss Khloe Reed's private accounts over the last twenty-four months."

Caleb fell back into his chair, staring at the severed wedding ring as if it had suddenly turned into white-hot iron.

"She’s not throwing a tantrum, Mother," Caleb said, his voice barely a whisper. "She’s tearing us down."
