Chapter 8 - The Desperate Play

When Alejandro walked into the boardroom, he looked like a man who had been running through a rainstorm for forty-eight hours. His suit was wrinkled, his eyes were bloodshot, and his hands were trembling slightly as he adjusted his cuffs. The pristine, untouchable corporate prince of Santa Fe had vanished, replaced by a desperate speculator trying to survive the margin call.

He stopped at the edge of the glass table, looking at the fourteen analysts who didn't even look up from their screens as he entered.

"Valeria," he said, his voice dropping into that familiar, soft tone he used to use when he wanted me to forgive him for missing our anniversary. "We need to talk. Alone. Without your grandfather's security team recording our every word."

"You don't have the status to demand privacy here, Alejandro," I said, not lifting my eyes from my ledger. "Say what you have to say from there. You have exactly three minutes before my next operational meeting."

He swallowed hard, his hands gripping the back of one of the leather chairs to steady himself. "I know you're angry. I know the parking garage... it was a mistake. The guards went too far. I told them to protect the perimeter, I didn't tell them to hurt you. Mauricio misunderstood my instructions."

"Mauricio already signed a confession, Alejandro," I said, turning the glass tablet toward him so he could see the digital copy of his assistant’s signed statement. "He explicitly states that you watched the security monitor while they held me down."

Alejandro’s face went through a brief, ugly spasm of panic before he controlled it. He leaned forward, his voice rising. "Okay, fine! You have the upper hand! You have the Serrano money behind you! But if you take down Grupo Montiel, you destroy three thousand jobs in the northern sector. You destroy the pension funds that invested in our corporate bonds. Is your personal pride worth a regional economic crisis?"

"It’s not my pride, Alejandro," I said, standing up slowly, my bound ribs holding my posture completely straight. "It’s your debt. You spent three years telling me that my success was an insult to your family's dignity. You made me clean your mother's house while you used my intelligence to structure your logistics contracts. I didn't create your liquidity crisis. Your greed did."

He took a step back, his eyes darting toward the glass windows as if looking for an exit that didn't exist. "What do you want, Valeria? You want the tower? Take it. You want the cars? Take them. Just withdraw the criminal complaint. If I go to prison, the Salgados will sue my mother for the breach of the engagement contract. She... she won't survive a federal trial."

"She should have thought about survival when she made me kneel on her kitchen floor, Alejandro," I said, walking to the door. "Your three minutes are up. Elena, call the federal marshals. Tell them the suspect is currently inside our perimeter."

"Valeria!" he screamed as two large security guards gripped his arms, pulling him back from the table. "You're a monster! Your mother was right to run away from your family!"

"My mother ran away from a king, Alejandro," I said as the elevator doors began to close between us. "She didn't run away from a thief."
